Volunteer with Charity for Disabled in Beijing - China

Volunteers working in this program get an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of children and adults  suffering from mental disabilities. Volunteers work in a charity for Mentally challenged in Beijing. They mainly provide services and help for mentally disabled children and adults in the community. The mission of the charity is to spread the model of community based services and improve the quality of the lives of people with mental disabilities.

Their are two project centers in Beijing: - 
 
A) Rainbow team (12 - 15 students)
At this center,  the students are in the age group of 8-16 years. Some students are orphans while some come from a poor family. But all of the students suffer from different mental disabilities. They have outside activities in the morning and inside team work in the afternoon. The volunteers can help to take care of the student safety when they are taken for  outdoor activities such as shopping, going to a park, going to the library.  Playing and communicating with students, Teaching music and painting , doing some computer work are some of the activities involved at the center. It’s located in a residential building in Tiantongyuan community. The volunteers can take subway to the charity easily from the accommodations. 
 
B) Three-color workshop (17-20 students)
At this placement ,students are adults from different age groups. The students learn how to make handicrafts and paintings. The training helped them in providing with an employment opportunity. There are also some other activities such as hutong tour, painting exhibition and dance or song performance for visitors from all over the world.  The volunteers can help with wide variety of tasks such as helping or teaching making handicrafts, English and music teaching,marketing promotion and website construction for the charity, help to organize some sponsor activities. The volunteers can take subway to the charity easily from the accommodations.

Program Requirements

Volunteers must be 18 years or older at the beginning of the program. Volunteers should be open to working in a new culture and environment and should love working with kids.
 

Project Location

The project placement is located in the capital city of Beijing. The city is the political, educational and cultural center of the country and as such it is rich in historical sites and important government and cultural institutions. Having hosted the Olympics in 2008 , the city now boasts of great infrastructure and is now one of the most visited tourist locations in China.
 

During your Free Time 

Volunteers are free on weekends and have time to explore the city and its tourist areas. Beijing has an efficient public transportation system which includes the subway , buses and taxis. The most popular tourist spots areTianamen Square, Great Wall of China (1.5 hour bus ride from the city) , Forbidden City , Temple of Heaven , National Museum, Summer Palace and Silk Market. 

What we provide

Airport Pickup: Volunteers are picked up from the Beijing Capital International Airport by the local coordinator. 
 
Orientation: All volunteers are provided with an orientation by the local coordinator before starting their project work. The Orientation session covers areas like local transportation , volunteer safety , project introduction and local markets.
 
Lodging: Volunteers are provided accommodation in a youth hostel within the heart of  Beijing. The youth hostel has a very convenient location and is located just outside the Tuanjiehu Station Subway Line 10 , which is very convenient for the volunteers for going to the projects. The hostel has facilities such as air conditioning, dining area, kitchen area to cook your own meals , internet facility and hot showers. Project Drop: All volunteers are dropped to their projects on the first day of the program. After that , volunteers need to commute in between their project and accommodation.

In-country support: 24 hours support provided by our local staff. You will be provided with the contact details of the local coordinator and staff who will be contactable 24 hrs once you are in country.
 
Pre-departure information: After we receive full and final payment all participants are provided by a pre-departure information booklet by e-mail which will have all vital information about your program. The Pre Departure Information Booklet provides the complete details of the country, project locations, Visas, Immunizations, Things to Pack list, Accommodations, Contact Information etc.

Start Date

Volunteers can begin their project placement on any Monday of the month. Volunteers need to arrive one day prior to their program start date.

What are the Program locations in China?

Volunteering Solutions offers programs in the capital city of Beijing as well as Shanghai.

Does Volunteering Solutions help with Visa?

Receiving a tourist visa for tourism purpose is the volunteer's responsibility. Volunteering Solutions strongly recommends all volunteers to apply and get a tourist visa before departing for China. If needed, Volunteering Solutions do provide with written document which would help volunteers in getting the Visa.

When should I apply for the volunteer programs in China?

We are able to offer placements from any Monday of each month year round. Because of the increasing volume of applications, participants are requested to apply in advance to secure their spots.

How long does it take to process my application?

Once you have applied, we will send you details of your placement usually within 7-10 working days.

When do I need to arrive in China for my program? What will happen once I arrive in China?

All volunteers need to arrive one day before their program start date. Volunteers are picked up from the Beijing International Airport by the local coordinator or representative. Those volunteers who are arriving overland or are already in China will be picked up from the bus station or at a meeting point decided beforehand.

How do I get to the program location?

Your country coordinator will take you to your placement and introduce you to everyone after giving you a basic orientation about the program/city/culture etc.

I want to know more about accommodation arrangements?

We provide you with accommodation from your start date to the end of the program. Accommodation will either be in the volunteer’s home or with a host family. Accommodation is shared along with other volunteers. You need to bring your own toiletries, mosquito net and sleeping bag.

Are there any necessary requirements to participate in the China-based volunteer programs?

The only qualifications are: -

-- Volunteers need to have an open mind and flexible attitude for working in a new and different environment.
-- The volunteer should bring energy and enthusiasm to make a difference.
-- Be in good health.

What immunizations/vaccinations will I need?

We recommend you speak to your doctor before coming. The following are recommended vaccinations: - 

  1. Hepatitis A and B
  2. Typhoid

Are there more expenses once I arrive in China?

Your program fee covers you for food, accommodation, airport pick up, Orientation, Pre departure information and in country staff support. You will need to cover yourself for your personal expenses, such as traveling, telephone, internet, shopping, sightseeing etc. However you should carry around $50 - $60 per week for your basic personal expenses, such as water, local transport, phone etc.

Is there phone and internet available on projects?

Yes there is usually a phone at every placement we provide. However you will have to use Internet café’s to use Internet. It is strongly recommended that you carry a mobile phone while travelling to China. You can get international roaming or can simply buy a local sim-card from the airport when you arrive.

What hours will I volunteer every day?

Volunteers usually work for 5 to 6 hours a day depending on their program. You will have weekend off so you can go to travel on weekends. However some organizations will need you to work on some Saturdays as well.

Where can I change my money in China? Are there ATM’s in China?

You can change money in any bank or at the airport by showing your passport. There are ATM's located all around the city (Beijing and Shanghai).

Can couples or families join the volunteer program?

Yes, couples and families are welcome to join our programs. We make special provisions for families joining our volunteering programs; we will be able to provide them with program placements and accommodations together.

Do I need to buy health insurance?

What sorts of clothes are required for China?

Lightweight clothing and rainwear is recommended as well as warmer clothing for the evenings (light jacket and/or light sweaters). A pair of walking shoes is highly recommended as well.
