Volunteer work at an Orphanage in Ghana
Volunteering with children in an orphanage is the most rewarding experience for volunteers. Volunteers work alongside the existing staff to care for the children in orphanages. The work in a children’s home involves feeding, dressing and keeping the children active within the homes.
Volunteers will also be assisting local staff and caretakers in daily work to help them run the orphanage in a better way. You can also assist in the office of the orphanage if you think you can contribute to make them more organized and run in a more efficient manner. Volunteers can design teaching programs for the kids and help in improving their knowledge and understanding by teaching them in a play way method.
Volunteers get to experience the local culture and the hospitality of the people of the Ghana, for which it is renowned all over the world. You can carry different volunteer supplies with you such as teaching materials, stationary items, books, flash cards etc.

Program Requirements Volunteers must be 17 years or older at the beginning of the program. Volunteers need to have an open mind and flexible attitude for working in a new and different environment. The volunteer should bring energy and enthusiasm to make a difference in the lives of Ghanaian children. Project Location Volunteer projects are offered in different parts of Ghana. Projects are available in Accra, Kumasi , Tamale and Volta Regions. Information of all the locations is given below: Tamale is the main town in Northern Ghana and one of the fastest growing towns in Ghana. It is full of life and vitality. As English is the common language in Ghana and most people can speak a little, you should be able to participate in everyday life fairly easily. However, the people of Tamale appreciate you learning a little of their language, Dagbani.When volunteers arrive in Tamale they are given a tour of the town to make sure they know about the area very well. Kumasi is located in southern central Ghana's Ashanti region. It is located near the Lake Bosomtwe, in the Rain Forest Region about 250 km (by road) northwest of Accra. Kumasi is approximately 300 miles north of the Equator and 100 miles north of the Gulf of Guinea. It is popularly known as "The Garden City" or "heart beat" of Ghana because of its many beautiful species of flowers and plants. Accra is the capital and most populous city of Ghana, a nation on the coast of the western region of Africa. Accra was founded by the Ga people in the late 1600s. During part of its history, Accra served as a centre for trade with the Portuguese, who built a fort in the town, followed by the Swedish, Dutch, French, British and Danish by the end of the seventeenth century. Volta Region of Ghana shears boarder Togo and other West African countries. It famous for its beautiful beaches. |
| What we provide |
Airport Receive/ Transfer: You will be met by our representative at Kotoka International Airport in Accra from where you are transferred to your project location. Volunteers going to Kumasi and Tamale regions will stay overnight in Accra and travel to the respective locations the next day. Orientation: A half day orientation will be provided by your local coordinator. Areas like culture, safety, locations, transportation are covered in the Orientation.After your orientation is over, you will be introduced to your project. Lodging: Volunteers will be staying with a standard Ghanaian Host family. Accommodation is either provided in an individual or shared room along with other volunteer. By staying with a family you will experience the local Ghanaian culture, language customs and traditions. Food: Volunteers are provided with 2 meals (breakfast and dinner) at the host family house. Ghanaian cuisine consists primarily of starches, soups, beans, and meat and fish. The Starches consist mainly of rice and doughy balls made from mashed cassava, plantain or yams. Insurance: All participants are covered for full comprehensive travel and medical insurance for their time of stay in our project. The Pre Departure Information Booklet provides the complete details of the country, project locations, Visas, immunizations, Things to Pack list, Accommodations, Contact Information etc. In-country support: 24 hours support provided by our local staff. You will be provided with the contact details of the local coordinator and staff who will be contactable 24 hrs once you are in country. During your Free Time During the Free Time volunteers can go and visit the different places of interest in and around the city. During the weekends, you can visit tourist attractions like Mole national Park, Larabanga ancient Mosque, Kintampo waterfalls, paga crocodile Ponds and the ancient Slave Camps. Volunteers in Accra can visit Independence Square, the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum and the fishing port at Jamestown and Makola Market. In Kumasi, you can visit, tourist attractions like the large Kumasi Central Market, Tafo kumasi, Fort Kumasi (built by the British in 1896 to replace an Asante fort and now a museum) and the Kumasi Hat Museum. |
