Your Role in the Program.
Your role is to check that the kids have completed the homework set to them by their teachers. Once they have completed this you can help them with more general work for subjects such as maths, Spanish, English, Craft activities, etc.
Volunteers can help them in their daily life,teach them,prepare different activities for them, play games with them and most importantly , bring a bit joy to their life.
Skills and Educational Requirements.
There is no educational requirement for this project; anyone with a heart to help is welcome on this project!
However knowledge of Spanish is required. If you do not know Spanish you can join our Spanish classes before you start your program or take classes everyday while volunteering. We also provide basic Spanish translations in our pre departure info. People should be patient,
committed and willing to learn.
Project Location.
Volunteer work with Street Children is located only in Cusco.
What we provide
Airport Receive/ Transfer: Our representative will greet you at the airport and will transfer you to your hotel/placement/home stay.
Orientation: A half day orientation will be provided by our staff. We cover areas like, culture, greetings, locations, transportation etc.
Lodging: Almost all placements have residential accommodation arrangements, however if that is not available volunteers will be staying with a local welcoming and educated family.
Food: 3 meals will be provided in this project depending on accommodation type Mon - Sat.
Insurance: All participants are covered for full comprehensive travel and medical insurance for their time of stay in our project.
In – Country travel assistance: If participants like to travel around, we provide with full support for bookings & arrangements to travel.
In-country support: 24 hours support provided by our local staff.
Pre-departure information: After we receive full and final payment all participants are provided by a pre-departure information booklet by e-mail which will have all vital information about your program. |

1.-What kind of volunteer work is available?
The volunteer opportunities are in teaching language skills, working in an orphanage, health project education, elderly, little children with disability, tutoring and advancing literacy, teacher assistants, home stay, cultural exchange, earthquake relief. Your placement will be tailored according to your individual needs and interests.
2.-When will I know specific details about my placement?
Placements are determined during your contact under consultation with the program coordinator so that requests and specific needs can be met with regards to both the volunteer and the needs of the community. As the situation in the country is constantly changing it is best to discuss your placement preferences during your contact period.
3.-Do I need to speak Spanish to become a volunteer?
No, but it would be helpful if you speak Spanish. You may have Spanish as your second language and that is also fine. When arriving in Peru you are placed into your volunteer position in which you will have an intensive language course on basic Peruvian phrases that you may need while volunteering.
4.-What immunizations/vaccines will I need?
Diphtheria and tetanus, Polio, Hepatitis A & B, Typhoid, Yellow fever, Rabies, Tuberculosis, Malaria (needs to be closely discussed with doctor).Some of these can be taken in oral form so please discuss with your doctor to see what is best for you. Some people can be affected quite differently to others by medication.
5.-When do I need to arrive in Peru?
In Peru our volunteering programs begins the 1st and the 15th of each month so it would be good if you could arrive at least one day before one of these dates. However you may like to arrive earlier to settle yourself before volunteering begins.
You will be met at the airport or bus station in your placement accommodation can be arranged for you if you arrive earlier than when the volunteering begins. You will have to pay your own expenses for any time you stay in Peru outside of your volunteer time.
6.-What are the living arrangements when volunteering?
You are provided with accommodation which is covered by the program fee. During the volunteering you will be accommodated in a home stay or volunteer residence. Three meals a day are provided for you from Monday to Saturday. You are advised to buy your own bottled water.
7.-Are we able to do any sightseeing while volunteering?
Yes. You can choose to take a 2- 4 day break between volunteering. You are free to do as you please during this time. There are often other volunteers that want to do trekking or just see the local sights. You will however need to have reserve money for this time according to what you plan to do. You can survive on as little as $15 (U.S) a day in Peru. You can also spend much more if you want a bit of luxury before volunteering begins.
8.-Are there more expenses once I arrive?
No, While you are volunteering in Peru, only you will spend money in your own expenses. (coffee, internet, public transportation, party, phone calls, clothes, others).
9.-How safe is it to volunteer in Peru?
Peru is generally a safe country. We work very hard to ensure you are placed in safe environments while volunteering.
10.-How many volunteers are there on site at the same time?
This depends on how many people volunteer at any one time. Usually there are between 2 – 5 volunteers.
11.-What resources are available for teaching when I'm volunteering? Do I need to bring my own?
If you have resources that you think may be appropriate discuss this with us via email to see if you should bring them. Most likely anything you have will be of help as there will be limited resources.
12.-Are there any time of the year that I cannot volunteer?
No, you can volunteer at any time of the year. January, February, March are school holidays so placements are limited to areas where schools are open or where teaching can be done in learning centers. There are many festivals throughout the year which can interrupt your program, but which are also a good way of interacting with the culture.
13.-What age do you have to be to volunteer?
You must be 17+ years old and above. There is no upper limit. You just have to be in good health.
14.-Do you provide any financial support?
We unfortunately are not in a position to offer any financial support.
15.-What countries do most volunteers come from?
The majority of volunteers that come through Awaiting Angels are from the United States, Canada, England, and Australia. We also have smaller numbers of people from Europe, and New Zealand.
