What documents do I need to submit with my application? You need to submit an online application at www.volunteeringsolutions.com/apply_now.htm .
Application form can also be downloaded from the website and sent by fax or post.
You need to submit a photo and your resume along with your application.
How long does it take to process my application?
The application process takes 10 working days -occasionally longer (given the time of year). However, in the event that interested participants require their application expedited due to time constraints, they are requested to contact our office prior to submitting their application.
Where are the Programs located in Sri Lanka? Our Volunteer Projects are located in and around Galle, Kaegalle and Kosgoda.
When do I need to arrive in Sri Lanka for my program?
You can come one day in advance from your program starting date.
Do I need a VISA for Sri Lanka? A Visa on Arrival is issued for 30 days stay. Visa extensions can be obtained at the Immigration Office in Colombo. Please visit the following site for more details, http://www.immigration.gov.lk/html/visa/fees.html
Which airport do I need to book my flights to? You need to book your flights to Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayake which is 22 miles from Colombo. (Airport Code: CMB)
What should I do if my flight is delayed? Please inform your Country Coordinator and inform him of the delayed arrival time. If possible, send a mail to the coordinator and to the main office as well.
If I want to arrive earlier than my program start date, where do I stay and who will organize the accommodations?
You will be responsible for the accommodation and food, if you arrive several days earlier than your start date. (Arrive one day before start date)
You must contact the coordinator and meet at some designated place.
What will happen once I arrive in Sri Lanka?
Our Coordinator or representative will be there to meet and greet you at the airport and from there you will be taken to the project or hostel depending on the time of your arrival.
When will I know specific details of my placement?
Once you have applied, we will send you details of your placement usually within 10 working days.
How do I get to the program location?
Your country coordinator will take you to your placement and introduce you to everyone after giving you a basic orientation about the program/city/culture etc.
What are the accommodation arrangements like?
We provide you with accommodation from your start date to the end of the program. Accommodation will either be in a host family or arranged at your program location itself. You will have your own room, which you might share with another volunteer. You should bring along things like, mosquito net, mosquito repellent ,towels, own soaps and shampoos. Accommodation will be neat, clean and basic. Please do not expect 5 star arrangements.
What will be the food arrangement?
You will get freshly cooked food 2/3 times a day depending on your program. Food is usually vegetarian but meat is also provided sometimes.
Usually, Sri Lankan meals include Rice and Curry, Vegetables, Meat and fruits.
What is the age range to volunteer?
You must be 16 years or older to volunteer. The maximum age limit is 60 yrs. Those who are older than 60 years and are fit and in a healthy condition are also allowed to volunteer. (No insurance would be provided for those aged above 60 years).
What immunizations/vaccinations will I need?
We recommend you speak to your doctor before coming. The following are recommended vaccinations:
- Tetanus and diphtheria
- Polio
- Hepatitis A and B
- Typhoid
- Rabies
- Malaria
- Japanese Encephalitis(Only , if you plan to visit rural areas)
Is Sri Lanka safe? Sri Lanka is a safe and tourist friendly country.Thousands of tourists visit Sri Lanka every year and visit different tourist attractions.
There are some areas that are not very safe to visit , due to terrorist group called LTTE .Although , LTTE doesn’t target tourists , you should still avoid these areas. These areas include the extreme Northern part of Sri Lanka including city of Jaffna.
Our Volunteering Programs are located in Southern part of Sri Lanka, which is a completely safe and secure area.
How is the Climate in Sri Lanka? Sri Lanka has a tropical climate i.e. hot and humid. The best time to visit Sri Lanka is from October to May. The Southwest monsoon period ranges from June to September.
Can couples or families join the volunteer program?
You can come in couples or groups as long as most people are above 18. We cannot accommodate anyone below the age of 16 even if they are accompanied by a family.
Are there more expenses once I arrive in Sri Lanka?
Your program fee covers you for food and accommodation. You will need to cover yourself for your personal expenses, such as travelling, telephone, internet, shopping, sightseeing etc. Travelling within Sri Lanka is cheap; however, you should carry at least $100 per week for yourself.
Where can I change my money in Sri Lanka?
You can change money in any bank or at the airport by showing your passport.
Are there ATM’s in Sri Lanka?
There are ATM’s in Sri Lanka. You may or may not find ATM’s; it will depend on your placement location. ATM’s are available in Galle and Kaegalle.
Is there phone and internet available on projects?
Yes there is usually a phone at every placement we provide. However you will have to use Internet café’s to use Internet. It is strongly recommended that you carry a mobile phone while travelling to Sri Lanka. You can get international roaming or can simply buy a local sim card from the airport when you arrive.
What hours will I volunteer every day?
Volunteers usually work for 5-6 hours a day depending on their program. You will have weekend off so you can go to travel on weekends. However some organizations will need you to work on some Saturdays as well.
Are we able to do any sightseeing or travelling in weekends?
You will usually have 2 free days per week, you can utilize this time for anything you like. All costs are at the volunteer's expense. Our local coordinator will help you organize local tours.
Do I need travel insurance?
Volunteering Solutions provides comprehensive Travel and Medical Insurance to all the Volunteers below 60 years.
