Summer Volunteer Kenya & Safari - 2008

Kenya is the most popular African destination for safari. It is the original home of safaris. Both exclusive budget safaris and luxury holidays are available. It is also a popular destination for volunteers in Africa. Start your Kenya volunteer program with a cultural immersion program in Nairobi. The Summer Volunteer program from Volunteering Solutions starts with an orientation and dinner. It covers informative session on the needs of local communities, language, currency, and how to be safe and streetwise in Kenya. As a part of program, you will have opportunity to see the majestic Great Rift Valley, camp by Lake Naivasha and visit Lake Nakuru National Park. There will be a stunning photo stop as well as a visit to unique cultural centers and Masai market.

Program Details & Itinerary

Day 1 - July 1st 2008 - Orientation and Welcome dinner for the group at night.

Arrival will be at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Nairobi. You will be met by Volunteering Solutions co-coordinator in Kenya as well as local staff. You will then be transferred to your host for some rest. You will have opportunity to email or call friends and relatives to let them know you have arrived safely.

In the evening, you will leave for orientation and dinner. These will take place at Ranger’s restaurant Nairobi. The service and the décor at Ranger’s are outstanding. The restaurant has a reputation for superb cuisine at reasonable prices.  A wide variety of vegetarian dishes as well as seafood, steak and poultry are available. A selection of desserts and drinks will be on offer.

Day 2 - Culture Program & Orientation with language.

In this meeting, the volunteer coordinator will give you important information about many things including safety, malaria, Kenya food, shopping, clothing, cultural restrictions, money etc.

Orientation Manuals will be distributed and a review of other material such as maps etc done.

Information and profiles of the home-stay hosts will be introduced in this meeting.

In addition, you will be introduced to the profile of local communities where you will work. Issues such as eradication of poverty, combating HIV/AIDS, skills deficiency, business and economic development will be discussed.

You will also be introduced to basic Swahili phrases. If the volunteer would like to learn more Swahili, an optional 2 hour interactive language session can be arranged at a local language centre.

Day 3 – Culture program and visit to the malls

Volunteers will visit Bomas of Kenya for a major cultural immersion program. Different aspects of Kenyan culture are displayed at Bomas. It offers you "Kenya in a miniature" and lets you see the wonderful diversity of cultures that make up Kenya. You can view traditional villages representing the lifestyle of ethnic groups such as Masai, Kalenjin, Meru, Luhya, Taita, Kikuyu, Embu, Luo, Kamba, Kisii, Mijikenda, Taita and Kuria.

There are traditional dances from a various Kenya tribes performed here every day. Be prepared to immerse yourself the lifestyle of local communities.

You will enjoy a fun lunch of traditional Kenya cuisine such as githeri, ughali, chapatti, pilau etc.

Volunteers will also visit major malls in Nairobi including Sarit centre, village market, Yaya centre and Nakumatt junction.

Day 4 – Nairobi and surrounding areas sight seeing

Starting from Nairobi, volunteers will drive to Naivasha and get opportunity to see the majestic scenery of the Great Rift Valley. They will then drive down the escarpment to Lake Naivasha for lunch. You can relax in the afternoon, swim, enjoy a boat ride, and watch the spectacular birdlife or game view.

Dinner and overnight stay will be by the lakeside (camping). There will be night game viewing. The hippos at Lake Naivasha come out at night and campers enjoy the view. 

Day 5 – 3 weeks volunteering at an orphanage

On day 5, volunteers will be taken to the project site – Dream Project Children’s Home. You will be met and greeted by orphanage manager. You will receive some orientation as well as details about the orphanage.

Duties at the orphanage include:

  • Teaching the school going children and helping them to do their homework after school.

  • Keeping the children busy and organizing educational and recreational activities for them (games, art, music, etc.)

  • Assisting in maintenance and keeping the children’s home clean.

  • Helping with and monitoring the cleanliness of the children.

  • Assisting with the cooking, washing of dishes, laundry, building structures etc.

  • Teaching the children common courtesies, moral education etc.

  • Making suggestions to the home manager for improvement.

Last 2 days – Jungle Safari & farewell dinner.

Volunteers will have the opportunity to visit the breathtaking Lake Nakuru National Park. Lake Nakuru Park is one of Kenya’s most popular parks as most species of game found in the country including the “Big five” live here. Overnight stay will be in Nakuru.

Volunteers will also be shown Masai market and other places where they can purchase souvenirs and other special gifts.

The opportunity to witness the lifestyle and culture of the Kenyan people will give you an exhilarating and unforgettable Kenyan volunteer experience.

Program Fee

For the program of 4 weeks $1795 per person

(After 4 weeks of program duration for extra per week for volunteering only $195 per week)

Cost Includes

  • Following services are included:

  • Meeting and pickup at the airport.

  • All transfers with private or public transport for:

    a) Introductory week in Nairobi
    b) Local sightseeing programs
    c) All excursions included in the programs
    d) Local transport to project premises

  • Nairobi sightseeing during the introductory week.

  • Accommodation provided by Volunteering Solutions on twin/triple sharing basis during the program.

  • All meals - during the introductory week and working.

  • Filtered water - during the introductory week and working. All materials such as colored pencils, paper, sports equipment etc that are needed for the various activities throughout the program.

  • Jungle Safari 2 days.

  • Information for independent excursions during the weekends
