| Volunteer with Volunteering
Solutions programs in Dharmshala, (India) in the state of
Himachal Pradesh to the north, in the foothills of the
Himalayas. It’s a block of Kangra District of Himachal
Pradesh. We are situated in remote/rural areas of
Dharmshala with our International Himalayan Volunteer
Program with aims at serving the underprivileged and
marginalized children of the rural community by creating
educational programs with international volunteers, local
NGO’s and local people working together. We want to narrow
the gap between rich and poor by educating the people of
the rural Himachal.
Our project reaches out to help the poor in increasing
the learning and knowledge with the help of modern
teaching techniques and by inviting international
volunteers to Himachal. Our programs are designed to
better the cross-cultural and inter personal skills of the
international volunteer as well as the skills of local
students and teachers. Our program’s focus is the
volunteer work with the local NGO as well as creating a
unique and enriched volunteer experience. Programs
include:
Volunteer Activities
Morning Activities - Teaching and Child Care Work
Afternoon Activities - Building Maintenance and
Creating Atmosphere
Teaching
Our aim is to provide modern guidance
and to assist the teachers to give the best education
using world famous “Play-Way” methods and to teach the
child and their parents how to provide a better future.
For the students of 1st to 5th class, volunteers will work
with the teachers in teaching the students English, Math
and to expand their creativity. The volunteer activities
in the field include:
Þ Assist the teachers to provide low cost teaching
material and fun for the children.
Þ Volunteers will teach the children in school mental
mathematics and English.
Þ Creating a playful environment and enhance the
creativity of the children through painting, playing
games, singing etc.
Þ Our volunteers will help emphasize the importance of
attendance at school to the
Þ Students and their families, to improve overall
interest in education and reduce the drop out rate.
Þ For healthier and hygienic living, volunteers will
inform the child and their parents.
Þ About health needs and assist the government bodies
to maintain the clean and green environment.
Child Care
Work
In the rural areas, early childhood
care and education are extremely important. This job is
traditionally done by local childcare centers called “Anganbari,”
but they need help. Our aim is to support these local
bodies to promote and maintain the holistic childcare in
the area. For this project, the volunteer activities
include:
Þ Ensuring attendance by the children of the area to
these centers.
Þ Keeping the parents informed about the activities
their children are doing at the centre.
Þ Assist the local bodies in keeping record of each
child based on health, vaccination, growth and nutritional
condition.
Þ Help, prepare and, serve nutritious meals for the
children everyday with the help of a local worker.
Þ Create a fun, colorful, “Play Way” environment for
the children through games, stories and other creative
activities.
Þ Develop the physical health of the children through
activities that utilize their bodies in games, etc.
Building
Maintenance and Creating Atmosphere
In between their volunteer work,
volunteers will take part in some renovation, decoration
and maintenance of their work places (School & Day Care
Centers). The work which they will have to perform would
be:
Þ Black board making
Þ Repairing & white wash of premises
Þ Forestation around the work areas
Þ Help local bodies provide sanitation and hygienic
drinking water. |
