Volunteering Work Camps in Thailand
Introduction to ST Program in 2007
All the short-term projects that Volunteering Solutions engages in are geared towards alternative ways of thinking about
ENVIRONMENT care, small-scale economic development and sustainable growth. For us, the work itself is of secondary importance to the impact of the volunteers' (often highly original) thoughts on local development. Our organization work with local NGO’s who have their own centers where we try to implement our philosophies. We strive to build relationships with host communities to create an atmosphere where learning-by-doing and lifelong learning becomes the norm.
Volunteering Solutions tries to be active in TEACHING and agriculture, which we see as the basic forms of community development. Volunteers work in harmony with the local villagers by respecting and utilizing their valuable know-how. We are always trying to find more new and exciting places, projects and people to work with all over Thailand, and hope that our work camps help to create a better world for all.
It's always a nice experience to see the participants and locals working hand in hand and create a wonderful atmosphere; we hope these are small steps towards international understanding.
| Once you get over the initial culture shock of coming and working in Thailand, you will realize that helping the orphans/women will give you immense satisfaction and you will view life with a different perspective. A typical volunteer helping in an orphanage would help the children with their day to day activities such as: doing homework, making notes, playing with children, helping staff organize the orphanage, providing mental and physiological support, exchanging cultural views, teach them about health and hygiene. |

The different kinds of work camps
Typically, work is done for five hours per day, five days per week. The nature of this work varies widely:
ENVIRONMENT: Cleaning riversides, setting up recycling centers, making handicrafts from rubbish,
ENVIRONMENT TEACHING in schools, etc.
Agricultural: Harvesting fruit and planting vegetables in organic farms, learning about and making compost, etc.
SOCIAL work: Setting up after-school centers, organizing sporting events, etc.
Arts/Education: TEACHING English in schools, organizing festivals, performing plays, evening TEACHING, crafts projects, etc.
Others: Proposing ideas for change to local governments, visiting temples, making
ENVIRONMENT-friendly soap and paper, etc.
In Thailand we stress ENVIRONMENT and educational work, although we also organize other types of camps (as you will see in this year's program).
