Volunteering Program > India > Teaching English to the disadvantaged
Teaching English to the disadvantaged
Teaching English abroad gives you the great opportunity to share your knowledge with others and experience a new culture from within. It is one of the best ways to truly catch a glimpse of the soul of a place. You’ll have a lot of fun and gain valuable skills while your students practice their skills with you.
For teaching English it is not necessary for volunteers to have past experience and in-depth knowledge of grammar and vocabulary. The children having experience working with fluent English speakers is invaluable on its own. Whatever extra-curricular activity you may do with the kids- be it, playing games, story telling, singing or giving knowledge about your own culture, it involves talking in English and provides practice for the students. Most of the children are at a very basic require learning more about things in their daily life like body parts ,names of birds and animals ,opposites etc. and some conversation used in their daily life. This is a brilliant opportunity to teach children in an orphanage or a school for the disadvantaged kids in Delhi or National Capital Region and interacting with them is extremely valuable for children’s confidence and your learning of the local culture. One good technique of building rapport and empowering the children is to ask them to teach you basic Hindi at the same time as you are teaching them. You’ll come back with fond memories of an unforgettable experience.

Volunteer’s life on the field
Once you get over the initial culture shock of coming and working in India, you will realize that helping the orphans/women will give you immense satisfaction and you will view life with a different perspective. A typical volunteer helping in an orphanage would help the children with their day to day activities such as: doing homework, making notes, playing with children, helping staff organize the orphanage, providing mental and physiological support, exchanging cultural views, teach them about health and hygiene.
