Our volunteer teaching English projects are in the north of Thailand,
located in Chiang Mai. This is also known to have the friendliest people and best food! We work with schools that serve rural students. Many are the children of farmers who hope to use English to gain entry into a college or university.
Our target schools provide volunteers with Thai meals and comfortable accommodations. Volunteers should be able to ‘live like a local’, for example by eating spicy food, learning about Buddhism, and waking up early with the roosters. Volunteers teach in the classroom for 3-4 hours per day, and coordinate with the local English teachers on lesson plans. Projects run year-round and start dates are flexible (except school holidays in March-April and September).
Prior teaching experience is not required and you will definitely get the hang of it after a few classes. Most students know the basics of English already, and a few will already be able to hold simple conversations with you. Rural Thai schools tend to be quite large, so you can use the same lesson plan a number of times in different classrooms (that makes it easier!). After acceptance we will meet you in Bangkok, send you to our upcountry headquarters for two days of cultural training, and then it’s off to your homestay!
| Once you get over the initial culture shock of coming and working in Thailand, you will realize that helping the
locals will give you immense satisfaction and you will view life with a different perspective. A typical volunteer helping in an orphanage would help the children with their day to day activities such as: doing homework, making notes, playing with children, helping staff organize the orphanage, providing mental and physiological support, exchanging cultural views, teach them about health and hygiene. |
