Be a volunteer for this amazing program with Volunteering Solutions and contribute towards the conservation of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Rainforest. This region is known especially for its panoramic beauty, consisting of rivers, gorges, waterfalls, volcanic mountains and the oldest surviving tropical rainforest on earth.
This area is a storehouse of some rare flora & fauna, and home to many threatened species, including the Southern Cassowary, Yellow-bellied Glider, Lumholtz Tree Kangaroo, various possums, quolls, and three endangered stream-dwelling frog species. Being a volunteer, your main task would be to work with the conservationists and protect Mother Nature. Your days will be spent supporting seasonal conservation projects at local nature refuges, planting trees or removing weeds to create wildlife corridors.
No matter whether you are a traveler or a student looking for a meaningful volunteering experience, this 5 days' program will surely boost your knowledge and help you to learn through your experiences. You can expect to go beyond the typical tourist trail to experience the real North Queensland - exploring natural wonders from volcanic craters and blue lakes to lush rainforest, waterfalls and the regions unique wildlife.
Day 1 - The Journey Begins
In the morning, you'll meet your host at Cairns city hostel and travel to our Wet Tropics base in the beautiful Atherton Tablelands. On route, our first stop is Lake Barrine to view large Kauri Pines and the volcanic crater lake. We continue our drive to the picturesque blue waters of Lake Eacham, then on to Malanda Falls for lunch and a short rainforest walk. In the afternoon we set up camp for the week before a short drive to Mt Hypapamee volcanic crater and a walk through beautiful high-altitude rainforests – keep a lookout for Cassowaries and Tree Kangaroos. Return to camp for dinner.
Meals: Lunch, dinner
Days 2 & Day 3 - Volunteer & Learn
Grab your breakfast and packed lunch before our days' conservation activities begin at a local nature refuge. We'll start with a talk and guided walk through the nature refuge, before getting hands-on to support seasonal conservation efforts which typically include weed removal, tree planting, placing tree guards and mulch around young trees to ensure higher survival rates. In the later afternoon return to the campsite for free time before dinner.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Day 4 - Time to Explore the Hidden Trails
Have your breakfast and packed lunch before our mornings' conservation activities at a local nature refuge. Today we meet the wildlife refuge owner for a site tour and talk on how wildlife tunnels under the highway have enabled wildlife to move safely between properties and habitat corridors. We then spend the morning removal weeds to help restore rainforest habitat. After lunch explore two nearby 'hidden' waterfalls before returning to our camp for dinner and optional wildlife spotting at sunset.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Day 5 - End Of The Learning Journey
Have your breakfast, camp pack up and visit a local Tree Kangaroo Rescue Centre for an opportunity to meet these rare animals. Learn about the conservation efforts taking place to help save the Tree Kangaroos, before heading out to collect forage in the nearby forest which is used to feed rescued kangaroos. It's time for the return journey to Cairns, stopping at Tarzali Lakes for platypus spotting and lunch. Expected return time in Cairns is 4.00pm.
Meals: Breakfast and lunch
