Medical Internship in Thailand - Chiang Mai

Overview

Medical internship in Thailand is the best way to learn and grow, and Volunteering Solutions will ensure that each of you gets to experience something incredible. Medical Interns in this project will be paired with a full-time Thai doctor or medical professional and work five days a week (Mon – Fri) usually from 8:00 am – 4:00 pm.  

Please note that the daily shadowing hours can vary depending on the workload and hospital schedule. Each assignment takes place in an international-standard hospital in Chiang Mai, where interns are paired with a full-time doctor or nurse. 

Thailand has become a medical center for much of Asia and westerners travel half-way across the world to receive expert, inexpensive medical care. Thailand’s medical system is well known for its highly qualified doctors, staff and new medical equipment. The medical internship program in Thailand is available in Chiang Mai. 

No more than two interns at any one time will be paired with each full-time doctor. This assignment during your medical internship in Thailand is primarily observation based. You’ll follow your doctor or nurse on daily rounds while they consult with patients, administer treatment, and perform operations. Each stage of observation is carefully monitored and regulated to ensure the safety and comfort of the patients involved.

Program Requirements

Interns must be 18 years or older at the time of joining the internship. As an intern, you should have an open mind and flexible attitude for working in a new and different environment. All interns must provide additional documents such as Resume/CV, statement of motivation, list of preferred departments and letter of recommendation at least one month prior to joining the internship. Interns need to be a current student or recent graduate of a medical studies program to be accepted. This includes pre-med, medical school, nursing, public health, pre-nursing students.

Intern Roles & Responsibilities

As a medical intern, the main roles & responsibilities would be:

• Shadow and observe the professional doctors and learn how to handle the patients and treat them with utmost care
• Conducting hospital rounds with the doctors and medical staff

The hospitals have a wide variety of departments and services.Interns may be able to pick different centers and clinical areas of the hospital to focus their work on or to spend supplemental time in.

Intern Work Schedule

Day 1 – Friday
Pick up from airport, train station, bus station
Getting settled into accommodation

Day 2 - Saturday
9:00 – 9:30 Welcome to Thailand. Orientation - Getting to know about your program (Staff, different volunteer and intern projects and history)
9:30– 10:15 Thai Language Lesson
10:15 – 10:30 Break.
10:30 – 11:45 Specifics about your project and preparation
11:45 – 12:00 Places to go and see!
12:00 – 13:0  Lunch.
13:00 – 16:30 City tour of Chiang Mai
16:30 – 19:45 Relax
19:45 Cultural Activity and Dinner

Day 3 – Sunday
9:00 – 9:15 Breakfast and unwind
9:15 – 10:00 Thai Language Lesson
10:00 -10:10 Recess
10:10 – 10:15 Staying Healthy and Safe in Chiang Mai
10:30 – 11:00 Do’s and Don’ts about Thailand and the Program

Day 4 to Day 8 - Monday - Friday 
After having a self-made breakfast at the accommodation, depart for the hospital. Interns are usually at the hospital from 8 am to 4 pm. The daily schedule and workload can vary as well. You will have your lunch at the hospital or at any restaurant nearby and will be back to the accommodation by the evening when you are free to go out with other participants for dinner or just exploring the city.

The same routine will be repeated for the following workdays. Changes, if any, will be notified.
