Volunteers usually work for meaningful community development projects and also travel around Ghana. Program Requirements

Program Requirements

Volunteers must be 17 years or older at the time of joining the project. Participants should have an open mind and flexible attitude for working in a new and different environment. Volunteers need to be flexible, open-minded and have a passion for working with children. You should also be proactive and have the ability to take initiative. All volunteers must provide a clean criminal background check report prior to joining the program. A parental consent form shall be required for Under 18 participants joining the program.

Day 1 – (Arrival on Saturday) - Akwaaba !! – Welcome to Ghana  - Arrival and Welcome for the volunteers. Arrival will be at Kotoka International Airport, Accra. You will be met by Volunteering Solutions coordinators on arrival. On the day of arrival, accommodation will be provided in a hotel or guest house in Accra. Please note that all volunteers need to arrive in Accra on this day only. For those arriving earlier, they will be met at a meeting point decided beforehand.

 
Day 2 - Transfer to Project Location - On the second day, volunteers will travel to the project city, Tamale by flight. The flight from Accra to Tamale is of around 50 minutes duration. Upon arrival in Tamale, you will be picked up from the airport and transferred to your accommodations. 
 
Day 3  - Local City tour and Orientation - Volunteering Solutions program coordinators will provide important information about the safety, culture and give a tour of Tamale to the volunteers informing about the internet café, banks, restaurants, and markets.
 
Day 4 -  Project Introduction – Visit your project, meet the local staff and begin the volunteer work. 

Day 5 – 8 - Continue with the Volunteer project work. At evening explore the country with other volunteers and the shopping markets. 
 
Day 9 - 10 - Visit Traditional Ghanaian Village to witness local traditions and customs. Over the weekend, volunteers will be visiting the local villages surrounding Tamale to witness local traditions and customs. You will be meeting the local village chief, exchanging greetings and seeing their traditional way of living.During the evening the volunteers will be taking part in learning sessions with regards to the social activities in the village. These include drumming and dancing lessons. In the evenings, the villagers offer an entertainment program for the guests to watch and participate. Among others, there are options which include drumming and dancing with the whole village or listening to a storyteller who narrates old animal fables around a bonfire.

Volunteers will be involved in doing both skilled and unskilled work such as digging, mixing sand and cement, carrying rocks, sand, and bricks, fetching water, and painting the school buildings. They will work together with local skilled people for the improvement of their communities. The volunteers will be working in hand with the local community members. 
 
Volunteers will also be given options to work in orphanage placement as well as Teaching project. At these projects, volunteer duties will include :
  • Educate the school going children and helping them to do their homework after school.  Keeping the children busy and organizing educational and recreational activities for them (games, art, music, etc.) 
  • Helping with and monitoring the cleanliness of the children. 
  • Help the children to learn common courtesies, moral education etc. 

Day 16 - 17 - Weekend Tours 
Visit Mole National Park - Largest Wildlife Refuge in Ghana: - Over the weekend, volunteers will be visiting Mole National Park which is located 135 km west of Tamale. While on the trip volunteers will be accompanied by the local coordinators.

of the Wildlife Department. Mole National Park was the first Wildlife Protected Area to be established in Ghana. Mole National Park represents a fairly undisturbed guinea Savannah ecosystem dominated by open savannah woodland. The park has very rich flora and fauna. Over 93 species of mammals, about 400 species of birds, 9 amphibian, 33 reptilian, and several insectivorous species and 5 endemic butterfly species have been recorded.

Please note that meals during the stay in Mole National Park are not covered in the fee. Volunteers need to pay for them separately.

Day 18 - 20 - Volunteer work at the Project
 
Day 21 -  Visit Boabeng Fiema Monkey Sanctuary and Kintampo Waterfalls.
Boabeng-Fiema Monkey Sanctuary is a community-based Sanctuary located at Boabeng and Fiema a twin community in the Nkoranza district of Brong Ahafo Region. The sanctuary protects the headwaters of the streams that are consumed in the locality. It has a good number of the Black and White Colobus, Mona, spot-nosed monkeys and a variety of birds. The monkeys in the reserve are regarded as the children of the gods of the community; therefore they are neither hunted nor killed. A system of traditional taboos and their community enforcement protected the monkeys for generations. 
 
Day 22 - On the last day of the week, volunteers will be taking their flights from Tamale.
 

Living

Living

Volunteering Solutions strives to provide best of the living and other arrangements to its volunteers. Like we keep saying, just pack your bags and arrive at your placement destination. From your airport pickup, stay, meals, weekend tours and other nitty gritties, VolSol manages everything for you.

Airport Transfer

You will be met by your program coordinator at Tamale Airport from where you will be transferred to your project location.Participants can book your flight to arrive at Accra International Airport and then a short connecting flight to Tamale. You can also choose to stay overnight in Accra and take the flight to Tamale on the next day. We can offer an optional Accra pickup service at extra charges. The service will include pickup in Accra, one night stay in a hotel/guest house in Accra and transfer to the airport to continue your journey.

Accommodation

Volunteers will be staying at a standard Ghanaian volunteer homestay managed by the local program coordinator. In case space is not available in the volunteer home, you will be accommodated with a Ghanaian Host family. Accommodation is either provided in an individual or shared room along with other volunteer. By staying with a family you will experience the local Ghanaian culture, language customs and traditions. There are separate rooms for male and female volunteers with shared toilet facilities. Participants should note that living is of basic standard and you should not expect luxuries. Power cuts are common in Ghana and most rural houses do not have running water during times of drought. Bedding is provided, however, volunteers need to bring their own towels and mosquito nets (these can also be purchased in Ghana). Air conditioning is available in the volunteer house and the participants need to pay the extra charge to avail the facility in the country.

Orientation

An orientation and briefing session will be provided by your local coordinator. Areas like culture, safety, locations, transportation are covered in the Orientation. After your orientation is over, you will be introduced to your project and also given a tour of the local market and town of Tamale.

Meals

Volunteers are provided with 2 meals (breakfast and dinner) at the host family house. Ghanaian cuisine consists primarily of starches, soups, beans, meat, and fish. The Starches consist mainly of rice and doughy balls made from mashed cassava, plantain or yams.  Famous Ghanaian dishes include Banku and Fufu.

During your Free Time

On the weekends you can head out to explore places such as Mole National Park and Monkey Sanctuary. Volunteers also visit Paga to visit Crocodile Park or further south to Cape Coast to enjoy the beaches. On weekdays, participants have free time in the evenings and spend time relaxing at their accommodation or socializing with other volunteers and the local people.
