Overview

The Dental Elective Internship in Peru is designed for dentistry students who wish to gain valuable knowledge and skills by working along with professional dentists. Internship work includes assisting the dentists in their tasks and helping in the sterilization of supplies as well as doing hands on tasks depending their medical and experience background.

On a daily basis, the routine varies but interns usually work for 4-5 hrs in a day with evenings and weekends free to travel and explore.

Note: The program is suitable only for dental students who want to gain hands-on experience and skills before starting professional work.

What to bring for your Dental Elective Program?

Each volunteer must bring the following list.

  1. Periodontology kits (x2)
  2. Conservation kits (x2)
  3. 50 dental needle (different sizes)
  4. 01 white medical jacket and Scrubs (to wear daily)
  5. Box of surgical gloves (x2)
  6. Alcohol wipes (x2)
  7. Gauze (x50)
  8. Medical cotton (x4)
  9. Dental composite resins (white filling)

Interns participating in this project need to bring their own materials to develop dental cures and prophylaxis (it is mandatory).


Program Requirements

Program Requirements

Interns must be 18 years or older at the time of joining the internship. As an intern, you should have an open mind and flexible attitude for working in a new and different environment. Dental interns must provide a clean criminal background check report, CV, Passport Copy as well as other documents and credentials pertaining to their qualifications prior to joining the program. The program is available for only dental students looking to gain valuable exposure by doing dental elective abroad. Students must have an intermediate level of Spanish to join the program.

  • Interns will have to work with the dentists, assisting them in the daily work. (Tasks will depend on your expertise and qualification)
  • Interns will also have to organize Dental Care camps.
  • On certain occasions, interns also visit public schools and children kindergartens centers and teach the importance of oral hygiene. 

Intern Work Schedule

Intern Work Schedule

  • Sunday -  Arrival in Cusco, Peru
  • Monday - An orientation session will be conducted by the local coordinator, informing the volunteers about relative topics such as safety, culture, language, places to visit, behavior, food, and other suggestion over things to do in Peru.
  • Tue to Fri - Volunteer Work.
  • Weekends: Free to explore the city/ Head out for Machu Picchu, Sacred Valley etc.
  • Breakfast - 07:00 am to 08:00 am
  • Working hours at the placement - 09:00 am to 01:00 pm and 02:00 pm to 03:00 pm (The second shifts depends on the requirement at the placement)
  • Lunch - 01:00 pm to 02:00 pm
  • Dinner - 07:00 pm to 08:00 pm

The same volunteer work schedule continues from the second week onwards.

Note: Please note, the schedule may vary depending on the particular project the volunteer is participating in.


Living

Living

When you choose to volunteer in Peru, just pack your bags and arrive at the destination with a relaxed mind. Our dedicated coordinator at the location arranges airport transfers, stay, meals and also weekend tours for you. All you have to do is arrive.

Airport Receive/ Transfer

Interns are picked up from the Cusco Airport by the local coordinator or representative. Those interns who are arriving overland or are already in Peru will be picked up at a meeting point decided beforehand or at the bus station.

Orientation

A half day orientation will be provided by the local staff. Areas like culture, greetings, locations, transportation, safety and volunteer placements are given during the orientation. The orientation will be given by the local staff in Peru.

Accommodation

Interns are provided accommodation with local host families. By staying with a host family you will experience the local culture, customs and Peruvian way of living. Volunteers and interns are hosted in shared bedrooms with other volunteers. Usually there are 2 bathrooms in every host family with hot showers. Accommodations are clean and comfortable. Some houses have WiFi connection and cable TV as well.

Meals

Interns are provided with three cooked meals a day (Monday- Saturday) at the host family house. Meals vary from day to day and generally include soups, vegetable salad, rice, potatoes, juice, dessert etc.

During your Free Time

Interns are free to visit and see places or do shopping during their free time. Cusco’s main attraction is Macchu Picchu where you can stay for 1 or 2 days according to your budget. You can explore nearest cities around Cusco, like Arequipa, Puno and Puerto Maldonado. (Weekends)
