In this island country, more than one million people depend upon fisheries for their daily income and fish is the major source of protein in local diets. Despite this, there is very little information available about the status of Sri Lanka’s vulnerable and endangered marine ecosystems. Hence, we have taken up the cause and curated this program, so that we can carry out the research and conservation in this area, with the valuable coordination and contribution of the volunteers.
This program, in a broader spectrum, is a long term marine research and conservation project based on the west coast of Sri Lanka. The following social, ecological, economical, information and conservation issues and concerns have been identified as being important concerns that need to be addressed to protect the marine environment of Sri Lanka:

It'll not only enlighten you about the problem areas and expose you to the harsh realities, but also give you a chance to do something good for Mother Earth, as well as the people living in this part of the world.

Volunteering Solutions will make sure that all our volunteers in Sri Lanka are provided the best of the services to make their volunteering enjoyable and comfortable. We make all the efforts to get the best of lodging, transportation and travel tie-ups possible for you in Sri Lanka.
Volunteers are picked up from the Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo by the local coordinator or representative and taken to Kalpitiya (i.e., project site) in a private car/van, which is roughly a 4-hour journey. Participants should plan to arrive before 2 pm on Sunday. In Kalpitiya, the local project team greets the participants and take them to the field house (where the volunteers live).
Return transportation from Kalpitiya to Colombo airport is not included. Participants can either choose to book a private transfer back at an additional charge (approx. USD 70-80) or they can take the public bus, which is covered in the project fees.
All volunteers are given a briefing about their project and the location by the local coordinator. Areas like culture, greetings, locations, transportation, safety, and volunteer placements are given during the orientation. Local transportation to and from the project is provided each day. Participants are supported throughout the duration of their stay by the local conservation and support team.
Participants will stay in a field house in Kandakuliya, Kalpitiya. The house is a spacious residential home with comfortable rooms with bunk beds, a kitchen and a modern western bathroom. Volunteers will be provided gender-based shared sleeping. All meals will be freshly-prepared and there will be a 24/7 tea-coffee stations and unlimited filtered bottled water.
Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner will be provided to the volunteers. The meals will mostly comprise of Sri Lankan dishes whereby giving the participants a taste of authentic Sri Lankan cuisine.
During Your Free Time
On the weekends and during their free time, volunteers plan short trips to some most popular tourist locations in Sri Lanka. You can take a city tour of Colombo and explore various temples, waterfront places, and wetlands. Get in touch with the local coordinator, who can guide you more on this.

Volunteers must be 18 years or older at the time of joining the project. 16 & 17-year olds can participate with parental consent. Children below 16 years must be accompanied by an adult or parents. All participants need to have an open mind and flexible attitude for working in a new and different environment. The volunteers should bring energy and enthusiasm to make a difference and have a keen interest in working with wildlife. You should be fit and healthy and willing to work outdoors in the project.
Note: The majority of the work is conducted in the field, hence casual comfortable clothing (t-shirts, shorts, swimwear, sandals, flipflops, hats, etc.) is recommended as participants are out in the open for significant periods of time. Sunscreen highly recommended as the sun can be strong during the day.
As we have limited spots available in our programs and we serve on first come first basis, it is recommended that potential volunteers book their programs well in advance to get confirmed placements. You can book your slot by filling the application form online and pay the application fee of $250. You can pay your program fee later and also, in installments. However, the complete payment should be made 45 days prior to the starting of the program. If you are volunteering in a group, you can also fill a group application form.

We encourage our participants to volunteer in a group. We take special care in providing you a placement and also customize your itinerary to make sure you get exactly what you are looking for. Also, we can design special group programs for groups of 5 or more. Our programs are designed to be safe, affordable and offer a great group volunteering experience to the volunteers.
