Read MoreRio de Janeiro in Brazil can be perfectly named as the city of contrasts, where travelers can’t help but move from one extreme to another. Whether you are looking for stunning coastlines or edgy underground nightclubs and pubs, from splendid monuments to favela societies, the city constantly leads travelers on a dynamic trajectory. Spend your weekends relaxing on the beaches or exploring Copacabana shopping district and hop on the Metro for the short ride into the historic center of town. You can also go for exploring Tijuca Forest National Park overlooking the city of Rio de Janeiro is the Christ the Redeemer statue. Don't forget to prepare your weekend travel bucket list before you kick-start your journey in Brazil.
Petrópolis – It is close to Rio de Janeiro, the Atlantic Forest and the elevation of the Serra National Park’s mountain. As compared to the blistering temperatures in Rio, Petrópolis is much milder and more of an escape. It’s actually easy to get there within an hour and a half via regular buses that run from Rio’s Bus Terminal. Remember to take the guided Bohemia Beer factory tour before heading out for the Crystal Palace which is a fancy building made entirely of glass.
Ilha Grande – This is a little paradise just to the south of Rio, and you can reach it by taking a bus to Angra dos Reis and then a 30-minute boat ride to this island. This island is surrounded with water & sandy shores and covered with Atlantic forest trees that harbor monkeys and other exotic creatures. You can also visit Lagoa Azul nearby for a great snorkeling and diving experience. Here it will be possible for you to see turtles and colorful fishes. The Lopes Mendes that is known for palm-fringed sands and surfing is to the south of Rio.
Arraial do Cabo and Cabo Frio – Both of these areas are close to each other so, they can be visited one after the other on the same day. Arraial do Cabo has stunning clear waters with white sands, and because of its diverse marine life and old wrecks, it has been given the name ‘The Diving Capital’. From here, you can take a boat trip to visit the two gorgeous beaches of Praia do Forno and Praia do Farol. Cabo Frio is actually a bit further to the north but it is an amazing kite-surfing and regular surfing spot in Rio and has beautiful beaches with choppier waters. You can take a two and a half hours bus ride from Rio to Cabo Frio.
Paraty – With cobbled streets free of motor vehicles and clad with white-washed buildings, Paraty, which is to the south of Rio, is absolutely charming with restaurants nestled within the streets and live bands playing all over. This town attracts artists and writers towards itself and it is not really uncommon to them painting radiant images in the streets on large canvases. There are other attractions here as well as blue beaches and pristine waterfalls that you can access by boat trips.
Búzios – It is considered to be an upmarket destination because of its breath-taking sands and clear seas, as well as the famous street of Rua das Pedras which is in the center among good restaurants, and buzzing bars of the hot nightlife of Búzios. The beautiful Ferradura where you can snorkel and engage in more water sports and Geriba which is also called as a surfer’s paradise because of its large waves are two of the best beaches of Búzios. A bus from Rio to Búzios will take you less about three hours.
