Visa-Friendly Destinations to Volunteer Abroad

Visa paperwork stops more volunteer trips than cost does, usually because someone discovered a requirement three weeks before departure. This guide groups our destinations by how easy they are to enter for short stays, and then covers the part most guides skip: what a tourist entry does and does not allow you to do as a volunteer.

A necessary caveat. Entry rules depend on your passport, change without much notice, and are set by governments, not by us. What follows describes the general position for many common passports, including US, UK, EU, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand holders, as we understand it at the time of writing in September 2026. Easiest: visa-free or visa on arrival for many passports

These destinations let many nationalities enter for short stays either with no visa at all or with one issued at the airport.

• Thailand. Visa-exempt entry for a large number of nationalities, with the exemption period extended in recent years. One of the simplest arrivals in the region. Volunteer in Thailand

Easy with a form: online authorization before you fly

These destinations require an online application, usually quick and inexpensive, that you complete before departure.

• Sri Lanka. An online Electronic Travel Authorization before arrival. Volunteer in Sri Lanka
• Vietnam. An e-visa available to all nationalities, applied for online; some passports also have short visa-free stays. Volunteer in Vietnam
• Kenya. An electronic travel authorization applied for online before travel, which replaced the previous visa system. Volunteer in Kenya
• India. An e-visa for most nationalities, applied for online in advance. The category you need depends on what you are doing, so check with our team. Volunteer in India
• New Zealand. An electronic travel authority for visa-waiver nationalities, plus a levy, before you board. Volunteer in New Zealand
• Portugal, Spain and Ireland. Visa-free short stays for many nationalities; EU citizens have free movement. Portugal and Spain follow the Schengen 90-days-in-180 rule, while Ireland is outside Schengen and counts separately. Plan ahead: visa required in advance

• Ghana. Most non-African passports need a visa arranged in advance through a Ghanaian embassy or high commission, which takes time and requires supporting documents. We supply the letters; start the application at least six weeks before travel. Volunteer in Ghana

The part that matters: volunteering on a tourist entry

Almost every country above admits you as a tourist. Whether a tourist entry covers unpaid, short-term volunteering is a separate question, and the honest answer is that it varies. Many countries treat short, unpaid volunteering with a registered organisation as compatible with tourist entry; some require a specific volunteer or business category regardless of pay; a few have changed their position in recent years. India is the destination where this needs the most care.

Three rules keep you on the right side of it. Never work for payment on a tourist entry anywhere. Ask us, in writing, which category our in-country team recommends for your specific placement and nationality, and follow it even if it is more effort. And carry the documents we provide, including the placement confirmation, because immigration officers can ask what you intend to do.

Practical checklist

• Passport valid for at least six months beyond your return date, with two blank pages; several countries in this list require it.
• Any online authorization applied for at least two weeks before departure, longer for India and Ghana.
• A printed copy of your onward or return ticket and accommodation details, which immigration staff in several countries ask to see.
• The correct entry fee in the accepted currency for visa-on-arrival countries; card payment is not always available.
• Travel insurance that covers volunteering activities, which some policies exclude.
