Overview

A short placement that still counts

A one-week placement drops you into an existing project rather than asking you to start one from scratch. You might assist a local teacher in a classroom, support staff at a childcare centre, or spend the week on a hands-on conservation task under local guidance. It suits people who cannot take extended leave — students, professionals, or a family fitting volunteering around a longer trip — and most placements ask for no prior experience.

Volunteering Solutions runs 8 one-week programmes across 7 countries, with the most bookings in Peru, India, Kenya and Nepal; the fuller list covers Peru, India, Kenya, Nepal, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Thailand (see the full destinations list). An in-country team supervises every placement day to day, so you support existing staff rather than taking charge of children, animals or a classroom. Fees start from £541, with a £179 deposit securing your place, and include accommodation, meals and airport pickup.

Before you apply

  • Age: 17+ to book independently; 18+ on some programmes, with under-18s able to join select family or high-school options with parental consent and extra supervision.
  • Experience: most placements need none — teaching and childcare roles ask for patience and flexibility rather than qualifications.
  • Documents: a background check is required for any placement working with children or vulnerable adults, arranged before you travel.
  • Language: basic English is enough almost everywhere; some Spanish helps in Peru but is not required.
  • Fitness: conservation and elephant-care placements involve outdoor, physical days, so reasonable fitness is expected.
  • Fee and booking: the fee covers accommodation, meals, airport pickup and in-country support; book ahead since start dates are fixed rather than rolling.

Responsible volunteering

Keeping a short placement responsible

A single week is not enough time to take sole responsibility for a classroom, a childcare shift or an animal, so every placement is built around supporting people who already do that work. Local staff lead lessons, care decisions and animal handling; volunteers assist alongside them. The elephant programme in Thailand is observation and welfare-based — no riding, bathing or selfies — and childcare placements never leave volunteers alone with children.

  • Background checks are required before any placement involving children or vulnerable adults.
  • Projects are chosen for continuity, so a one-week volunteer joins ongoing local work rather than starting something new.
  • Our safeguarding policy sets out how children and vulnerable adults are protected on every programme.

One Week Volunteer Abroad Programmes: frequently asked questions

What do one-week volunteer programmes abroad involve?

One-week placements plug you into an existing local project such as childcare, environment conservation, elephant volunteering and teaching. You work alongside local staff, following their lead on lessons, care routines or conservation tasks, so the week adds to work that is already underway rather than starting something new.

Who can join a one-week volunteer programme?

You need to be at least 17 to book independently; 18+ on some programmes. Select family or high-school options accept younger volunteers with parental consent and extra supervision. Most placements ask for no previous experience, just an open, flexible attitude toward a new working environment.

How much does a one-week programme cost?

Prices start from £541 for the most affordable one-week placement, secured with a £179 deposit. The fee covers accommodation, meals, airport pickup and in-country support; flights, visas and insurance are booked separately. See how programme costs are worked out for a full breakdown.

When can I start a one-week programme?

Start dates are fixed rather than rolling, typically once or twice a month depending on the programme and country. The next confirmed start is 23 Oct 2026. Check the start dates explorer for the full calendar before booking flights.

Where do one-week programmes run?

Placements run in Peru, India, Kenya, Nepal, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Thailand, with Peru, India, Kenya and Nepal taking the most bookings. Each destination runs a different mix of projects, so the exact placement — teaching, childcare, conservation or elephant care — depends on the country you pick.

Is one week long enough to be useful?

Yes, when the placement is designed for it. A one-week volunteer supports an ongoing local project rather than running one alone, so the classroom, childcare centre or conservation site keeps operating exactly as it did before and after your week there.

Can I extend beyond one week?

Some placements can be extended — the Peru kindergarten programme runs up to 24 weeks, and the New Zealand conservation project and Thailand elephant programme offer longer options too. Talk to your programme advisor before booking if you might want more than a single week.

Is a background check required?

Yes, for any placement working with children or vulnerable adults, which covers most one-week teaching and childcare programmes. This is arranged as part of booking and sits alongside our child and vulnerable adult protection policy.

What support is available during a one-week placement?

An in-country team meets you on arrival, runs orientation, and stays reachable throughout the week, alongside 24/7 support from Volunteering Solutions. Given the short timeframe, orientation is compact, but it covers the placement, local customs and who to contact if plans change.

How is a one-week programme different from a two-week or short-term programme?

The structure is the same — housing, meals, in-country support and a set project — just compressed into a single week. If you have more time, the 2 Weeks Special Volunteer Abroad Programmes or wider Short Term hub cover longer placements with more project variety.

Can families volunteer together for one week?

Yes, the one-week programme in Sri Lanka is built for families, combining community projects with cultural activities the group does together. It is one of several family volunteering options if you want to travel with children.
