Volunteer in Europe
Volunteer in Spain, Portugal and Ireland, with community, care, conservation and teaching programmes from £818 and local teams on the ground.
Volunteering in Europe: Spain, Portugal, Ireland
Europe, on this list, means three countries with quite different volunteer work. In Barcelona and Valencia, Spain, projects range from community development and special needs care to underwater and marine conservation — think reef surveys, beach clean-ups and coastal habitat work. Porto, Portugal, is the base for animal welfare (stray cat trap-neuter-return), food waste reduction, youth support and a surf-based community programme. Cork and Clonmel, Ireland, focus on community development, charity shop work, arts centres and education support, often with a homestay.
Each country runs on a local team: an NGO or community partner on the ground, plus an in-country coordinator who handles orientation, day-to-day logistics and 24/7 support. Programmes across the region run from £818, with placements from 1 to 24 weeks, so you can fit a short city-based project around a longer trip or stay for a full term.
Because Spain and Portugal sit in the Schengen area and Ireland does not, entry and stay rules differ by passport — something to check before you book. Beyond that, the practical side is handled locally: accommodation, meals and airport pickup are built into every programme fee.

Who Europe suits, and when to go
Europe suits you if
- You want a short, low-commitment placement — Spain and Portugal both offer programmes from 1 week
- You're interested in marine or coastal conservation, such as diving-based reef work in Barcelona or beach clean-ups and wetland restoration in Valencia
- You want hands-on animal welfare work, like supporting Porto's stray cat trap-neuter-return programme, rather than direct animal contact
- You're comfortable with a structured community placement — charity shop work or an arts centre in Cork and Clonmel, Ireland
- You'd rather volunteer in an accessible European city than a remote rural setting, with Barcelona, Porto and Cork all well connected for weekend travel
- You're a student or gap-year traveller who wants a placement under 24 weeks and a certificate of completion at the end
Seasons, arrival & logistics
Spain and Portugal are mild in spring and autumn, hot and busy through July and August, and milder but wetter in winter, especially in Porto. Ireland stays mild and changeable all year, with the wettest stretch from October to January and the longest daylight between May and September. Programmes run year-round, and the next start date across the region is 25 Oct 2026.
- Spain (Barcelona, Valencia): spring and autumn for milder, quieter conditions; summer is warmer and busier.
- Portugal (Porto): a similar pattern to Spain, with winters generally wetter.
- Ireland (Cork and Clonmel): pack for rain in any season; May to September brings the longest days.
Every programme includes airport pickup, and your country page names the arrival city. Visa and permitted-stay rules depend on your passport and differ between the Schengen countries (Spain, Portugal) and Ireland, which sits outside Schengen — check official sources before booking, and the VS team can advise once you've booked. Vaccination needs vary by passport and personal health history, so confirm with a travel health professional. All placements are unpaid volunteering, not employment.
Where the programmes are based: Spain Barcelona, Valencia · Portugal Porto · Ireland Cork & Clonmel. Airport pickup on arrival is part of every programme, and your country page explains exactly where you land and who meets you.
What our volunteers say
Volunteering in Europe: frequently asked questions
What kind of volunteer work is available in Europe?
Across Spain, Portugal and Ireland, VS runs community development, special needs care, environment conservation, wildlife & animal care and teaching programmes. In Spain that includes community development, special needs care and marine conservation around Barcelona and Valencia. Portugal centres on stray cat welfare, food waste reduction, youth support and a surf-based community programme in Porto. Ireland focuses on charity shop work, arts centres, education support and general community development in Cork and Clonmel.
Which European country should I choose?
It depends on the work you want. Spain suits marine conservation, community development and special needs care, and accepts volunteers from 16. Portugal is the place for animal welfare, food waste and youth support work in Porto. Ireland suits volunteers who want a structured placement in a charity shop, arts centre or classroom, usually with a homestay. All three run year-round from £818.
Who can join a Europe volunteer programme?
Minimum ages start at 16, though most Portugal and Ireland placements require 18+. Requirements vary by programme: some ask for intermediate English (Ireland's arts and education projects), basic Spanish (Barcelona's disability care programme), or just an open, flexible attitude and a clean background check, which every applicant submits regardless of destination.
How much does volunteering in Europe cost, and what's included?
Programmes start from £818, with a £179 deposit to book. The fee covers accommodation, meals, airport pickup and in-country support for the length of your programme. Costs vary by country and duration — Spain tends to be the most affordable entry point, Ireland the highest. See where the fee goes for a full breakdown.
How long can I volunteer for, and when do programmes start?
Placements run from 1 to 24 weeks depending on the programme. Most start dates are set weekly or monthly rather than open-ended, and the next available start across the region is 25 Oct 2026. You can check exact dates for each country on the start dates explorer before you book.
Where exactly in Europe do you run programmes?
VS runs programmes in Barcelona and Valencia, Spain; Porto, Portugal; and Cork and Clonmel, Ireland. Each city has its own local partner organisations and in-country coordinator, so the day-to-day experience, accommodation and project type differ by location even within the same country.
Is it safe to volunteer in Europe, and what support is there?
All three countries are well-travelled and generally low-risk destinations for solo and teen volunteers. Every programme includes airport pickup, a local orientation and 24/7 in-country support, and every applicant submits a background check before joining. See the safeguarding policy for how this works in practice.
What are the boundaries on the animal care programmes in Portugal?
Porto's animal care work is welfare-first: volunteers support local NGOs with stray cat trap-neuter-return efforts, handling logistics, trapping support and aftercare under staff supervision. There is no riding, bathing, cuddling or posed contact with animals — the goal is population management and welfare, not entertainment.
What are the boundaries on childcare and special needs programmes?
Volunteers assist local staff and never take sole charge of children or a classroom, diagnose or administer medication, or perform clinical tasks. In Barcelona's day hospital programme, for example, volunteers help design activities and crafts under supervision. Full detail is in the child and vulnerable adult protection policy.
Can I volunteer in more than one European country on the same trip?
Each programme is booked separately, but nothing stops you arranging two placements back-to-back, for instance a few weeks in Barcelona followed by Porto. Dates can be adjusted up to 45 days before departure under the flexible booking policy, which makes it easier to line up a multi-country itinerary yourself.
When is the best time to volunteer in Europe?
Spring and autumn are mildest in Spain and Portugal; summer is hot and the busiest season in both. Porto's winters are wetter than Barcelona's. Ireland is changeable year-round, wettest from October to January, with the longest days between May and September. Programmes run throughout the year regardless of season.
How do I book a volunteer programme in Europe?
Choose your country and programme, then submit an application. You'll get a welcome email followed by a booking confirmation within 7–10 working days, after which you log in to view trip details and pay the balance. Travel insurance is required before departure — see travel insurance for what to look for.
