Community Development Programmes

Do you have a passion for enhancing the quality of life in underprivileged communities globally? Volunteering Solutions provides a variety of Community Development Volunteer Abroad Programmes spanning Asia, Africa, Europe, and South America, offering volunteers the opportunity to positively impact the lives of local communities. The best part about the community development programmes is that volunteers can take up several different kinds of tasks in one project – teach an English class, help out in a childcare centre, take art and painting sessions for students, help with the renovation of a school building, be a part of a disease awareness campaign, assist in administrative tasks amongst other such activities.

What do our past volunteers say?

“My volunteering experience in Morocco was wonderful. I was only for one week and worked at the childcare centre with toddlers. Everything was very well organized and with good information. Good co-workers here in Rabat.” – Marianne F, Community Development Programme, Morocco

“I have the most positive impressions of the programme in Uganda. As a mature volunteer on my first trip to Sub-Saharan Africa, I was a bit concerned beforehand, but I felt supported and safe throughout my journey, both through the Volunteering Solutions Operations Office and the local team. The local coordinators were amazing, and completely dedicated to what they do. The work was fulfilling, varied, and flexible. I learned a lot, through the voluntary projects, our conversations with the local coordinator, and the sightseeing. I recommend this programme to any volunteers who wish to contribute to some of the most vulnerable communities, in a location that’s off the beaten track.” – Victoria P, Community Development, Uganda

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

What is community development volunteering abroad?
Community development volunteering abroad means working alongside local people on projects that improve daily life, such as construction, sanitation, environment or skills support. Across our 24 partner countries, these community-led, ethical projects are shaped by local priorities, not outside agendas.
Who can join community development projects?
Volunteers are generally 17 or older, with younger participants welcome on selected family and high-school programmes. No specific skills are required for most roles, though practical, hands-on attitudes help. The local team match your tasks to the project's current needs.
What kind of work will I do?
Tasks vary by location and may include light construction or renovation, improving facilities, environmental work, or supporting local awareness and skills activities. Everything is planned by our in-country teams so your effort meets genuine community priorities.
How much does it cost and how long does it run?
Programmes run from 1 to 24 weeks, with fees starting from around US£213 per week on the most affordable options. Fees typically include accommodation, meals, airport pickup and in-country support; flights, insurance and visas are extra. Check the programme pages for current pricing.
Is community development volunteering genuinely helpful?
Yes, because our projects are community-led and respond to needs identified by local people, supporting rather than displacing local workers. As a certified B Corporation we prioritise ethical, lasting impact, with orientation on arrival and 24/7 support from our in-country teams.
