Gap Year Volunteer Abroad Programmes
Volunteer abroad in 16 countries on a gap year programme built for ages 16+, with local teams and stays from 1 to 24 weeks.
A gap year with structure, not a script
Gap year volunteering with us means slotting into an existing project — a school, a community centre, a conservation site — for anywhere from 1 to 24 weeks. You work alongside local staff on tasks they have set, not tasks invented for visitors: helping a teacher run a lesson, supporting a childcare worker, assisting with animal welfare checks. It suits school leavers filling the year before university, students on a break, and anyone taking their first trip abroad without family. You are never left in sole charge of a class or a child, and wildlife placements are welfare-based, not entertainment.
Our in-country teams run placements year-round in South Africa, India, Ireland and Peru and across South Africa, India, Ireland, Peru, Philippines, Kenya and 10 more countries, covering teaching, community development, childcare, special needs care, medical volunteer and wildlife & animal care. Someone meets you at the airport, runs orientation, and stays reachable for the length of your stay. Programmes start from £454, deposit included, with a £179 deposit due when you book.

How we keep gap year placements responsible
Gap year volunteers are enthusiastic but new to the work, so every placement is built around clear boundaries. You support the class, not run it; you assist the childcare worker, not replace them; wildlife projects are hands-on care and welfare work, with no riding, bathing or posed photos with animals. Placements involving children or vulnerable adults require a background check before you travel, and our in-country teams brief you on what you can and cannot do on the first day.
- No volunteer is left in sole charge of a classroom, a child, or an animal
- Wildlife and animal work is welfare-first, never for entertainment
- Projects are set by local staff to match community need, not visitor demand
- Background checks apply to any placement near children or vulnerable adults

What our volunteers say
Gap Year Volunteer Abroad Programmes: frequently asked questions
What does a typical week of gap year volunteering look like?
On teaching and childcare placements you assist local staff through weekday mornings and afternoons, following lesson plans or activity schedules they set. Conservation and wildlife placements follow feeding, monitoring or habitat routines set by the host organisation. Evenings and weekends are free, and most volunteers live in a shared house with others in a similar age range. The exact setup depends on the country and project type, which run across teaching, community development, childcare, special needs care, medical volunteer and wildlife & animal care.
Who is gap year volunteering actually for?
It suits school leavers taking a year before university, students on a break, and anyone doing their first extended trip abroad without family. Programmes run from 1 to 24 weeks, so you can fit a short placement around travel plans or commit to a longer stretch. Most programmes accept volunteers aged 16+, with 18+ on some programmes, and no prior volunteering experience is required for most roles.
What's included in the fee, and what does it cost?
Fees start from £454, with a £179 deposit due at booking, and cover shared accommodation, meals, airport pickup, orientation and in-country supervision. Flights, visas and travel insurance are arranged separately. See how programme costs break down for the full picture, since exact fees vary by country and length.
How long can I stay, and when do programmes start?
Placements run from 1 to 24 weeks, so you can slot in a short break or a full gap-year stretch. Start dates run on a fixed weekly or monthly schedule depending on the programme, with the next available date 21 Oct 2026. Check exact dates by country on the start dates explorer. Extending once you are on the ground is possible where the project has space.
Which countries can I volunteer in on a gap year?
Programmes run across 16 countries, with the most bookings currently in South Africa, India, Ireland and Peru. The full list includes South Africa, India, Ireland, Peru, Philippines, Kenya and 10 more countries, spanning teaching, childcare, community development, special needs care, medical support and wildlife and animal care. Each destination has its own local team, so housing, orientation and project setup vary by country. Compare options on the destinations page.
How safe is this if it's my first time travelling alone?
An in-country coordinator meets you at the airport, runs orientation on day one, and stays reachable for the length of your stay. You live in shared volunteer accommodation rather than alone, with support available for anything from a lost passport to a medical issue. This setup is built for people travelling independently for the first time, not just seasoned travellers.
Do volunteers work unsupervised with children or animals?
No. Volunteers assist local staff and are never left in sole charge of a classroom, a child, or an animal. Placements involving children or vulnerable adults require a background check before travel, under our child and vulnerable adult protection policy. Wildlife placements are welfare-focused, with no riding, bathing or posed photos, only supported hands-on care.
Can I fundraise or use grants to cover the cost?
Yes. Many gap year volunteers raise part of their fee through platforms such as GoFundMe or JustGiving, and students can also look into university bursaries or scheme funding. See how to fundraise your trip for a starting point before you book.
What's the minimum and maximum age for gap year volunteering?
Most programmes accept volunteers from 16+, with a smaller number set at 18+ on some programmes depending on the nature of the work. Under-18 volunteers usually need a signed parental consent form. There is no strict upper age limit, and many placements also suit people in their twenties taking a break between study or work.
How do I book, and what if my plans change afterward?
Book by telling our team your preferred country, dates and project type; a £179 deposit secures your place. If your dates or programme need to shift afterward, our flexible booking policy allows free changes up to 45 days before departure. The remaining balance is due closer to your start date.
