What is volunteering in Africa?

Volunteering in Africa means joining a community, childcare, teaching, wildlife or conservation project across the continent — from Ghana and Kenya to Tanzania and South Africa — with accommodation and in-country support arranged for you. Most programmes run from one to several weeks, suit volunteers with no previous experience, and combine meaningful work with the chance to experience Africa's cultures, landscapes and wildlife.

Which African country is best to volunteer in?

It depends on what you want to do. Here's a quick guide to our most popular African destinations:

CountryBest forHighlights
GhanaFirst-timers, teaching & childcareWarm welcome, English-speaking, rich culture
KenyaWildlife & communitySafari, Maasai culture, varied projects
TanzaniaWildlife & conservationSerengeti, Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar nearby
South AfricaWildlife & well-supported first tripsCape Town, conservation, strong infrastructure
MadagascarMarine & conservationUnique biodiversity found nowhere else
MoroccoCulture & communityNorth Africa, easy to reach from Europe

Is volunteering in Africa ethical?

It can be — if you choose responsibly. As a certified B Corporation, Volunteering Solutions runs community-led projects designed around genuine local need. Two things to avoid anywhere in Africa: orphanage tourism (short-term volunteering with vulnerable children in residential orphanages, which research shows can cause harm — community and education projects are a better, more ethical choice), and unethical wildlife encounters such as lion-cub petting or "walking with lions", which are linked to captive-breeding tourism rather than real conservation. Choose hands-off, welfare-first wildlife projects and community-based placements.

When is the best time to volunteer in Africa?

It varies by region: East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania) is generally best in the dry seasons of June–October and January–February; Southern Africa (South Africa) suits roughly May–October; North Africa (Morocco) is mildest in spring and autumn. Projects run year-round — check the individual destination pages and confirm seasonal details before you book.
