Volunteer in Ghana: The Complete 2026-27 Guide (Programmes, Costs, Visa & How to Choose)

Ghana is West Africa’s most volunteer-friendly destination — stable, English-speaking, culturally rich, with programmes in Accra, Cape Coast, Kumasi and the northern regions. Teaching, healthcare, community development and construction all run year-round. Here is the honest UK guide: what programmes exist, real GBP costs, the pre-approval visa process, and how to book.

Why Ghana

Ghana is our recommended “first Africa” destination for UK volunteers — three reasons:

• English is the official language. Ghana was a British colony until 1957 and English remains the language of schools, government and daily business. UK volunteers can teach, work with healthcare teams and integrate into projects without a translator.
• Political stability + safety. Ghana is one of West Africa’s most stable democracies with among the lowest crime rates on the continent for tourists and volunteers. FCDO advice is generally green.
• Cultural depth. Kente cloth weaving, Ashanti heritage, historic slave-trade forts on the coast (Cape Coast, Elmina), Volta River drumming — Ghana is culturally the richest of our West African options.

Types of programmes that actually exist

Teaching in Accra, Kumasi or northern Ghana

Support Ghanaian teachers with English, maths and science in community schools serving low-income families. English is the medium of instruction so no language barrier. Monday to Friday, weekends free. No teaching qualification needed. From £435 for 2 weeks, £1,380 for 8 weeks.

Medical & healthcare

Shadow doctors and support nursing teams at Accra community hospitals and Kumasi’s regional health centres. For medical, nursing and allied-health students. Requires proof of study or professional registration. From £560 for 2 weeks.

Community construction

Support small-scale building projects (school extensions, community water infrastructure) alongside local builders in northern Ghana. Physical work; requires reasonable fitness. From £490 for 2 weeks.

Childcare centre & children’s programmes — NOT offered

We no longer offer these in Ghana or anywhere else, per modern child-safeguarding standards. Our childcare-alternative in Ghana is a day-care and family-support programme in Accra — supporting local social workers with community outreach, not residential care.

Women’s empowerment

Support women’s cooperatives (kente weaving, shea butter production, small business) in the Ashanti and northern regions. 4-week minimum for meaningful engagement. From £780 for 4 weeks.

UK-specific practicalities

Visa — plan ahead

Ghana is one of our few destinations without visa-on-arrival for UK passport holders. You must apply before travel through the Ghana High Commission in London.

• Apply 4-6 weeks before travel — the process can be slow.
• Tourist visa cost: £90-120 (single-entry, 30-60 days).
• You’ll need: passport valid 6+ months with 2 blank pages, application form, 2 passport photos, Yellow Fever certificate, invitation letter (we provide), proof of onward travel, proof of funds.
• Applications go through Ghana High Commission London or their approved visa service.

Insurance

Must cover volunteering. UK providers we recommend:

• Endsleigh Gap Year — includes West Africa; £65-110 for 2-4 weeks.
• World Nomads — flexible for trip extension.
• Direct Line Travel Insurance — well-priced for Africa.

Vaccinations — Yellow Fever is REQUIRED

Ghana requires a Yellow Fever certificate on entry — no certificate, no entry. Single vaccination, valid for life. Book 10+ days before travel (needs 10 days to become valid). Also: routine boosters (tetanus, MMR), Typhoid, Hepatitis A, and anti-malaria prophylaxis (Malarone or doxycycline). Rabies boosters recommended if in rural areas.

Language & culture

English is universal, but greetings in Twi (Ashanti) or Ga (Accra) are appreciated: “Akwaaba” (welcome), “Medaase” (thank you). Ghanaians are famously warm and family-oriented — expect frequent invitations to family meals and events. Dress modestly outside beach areas, particularly in the Muslim north.

Trip extension ideas

• Cape Coast & Elmina Castle (2-3 days) — powerful, essential history of the transatlantic slave trade. £100-200.
• Kakum National Park canopy walk (day trip from Cape Coast) — 7 suspended bridges 40m up in the rainforest.
• Mole National Park (3-4 days, north) — walking safari with elephants, £200-400.
• Volta River & Wli Falls (2-3 days) — West Africa’s tallest waterfall, drumming villages.

The ethics

• No childcare centre placements — we don’t offer these; neither should anyone else.
• No “slave castle tourism” as volunteering — visiting Cape Coast/Elmina as a personal experience is fine and important, but no legitimate programme frames it as “volunteering”.
• Fair-trade craft programmes — check that women’s cooperative programmes pay fair wages to the artisans, not just to intermediaries. Ours do; ask any provider directly.

How to book

1. Pick a programme + dates at least 8 weeks ahead (Ghana visa takes time).
2. Enquire via our Ghana destination page or WhatsApp.
3. Pay £179 application fee to lock dates + receive invitation letter for visa.
4. Apply for Ghana visa via Ghana High Commission London (4-6 weeks).
5. Book flights + insurance.
6. Get Yellow Fever certificate (10+ days before travel).
7. Meet your coordinator at Accra Kotoka International Airport.
