What to expect when you volunteer in Ghana

Get ready for a rewarding cultural exchange, hands-on work and a memorable experience in one of Africa’s most hospitable nations.

  • Accommodation: Volunteers stay in shared housing with others from around the world. It’s safe, sociable and gives you the chance to connect with fellow change makers.

  • Meals: Two meals a day (breakfast and dinner) are provided on weekdays, offering traditional Ghanaian dishes like jollof rice, waakye and groundnut soup.

  • Work: Your role will vary depending on the program. Expect to work weekdays, with weekends free to explore.

  • Free Time: Use your evenings and weekends to visit local attractions, connect with locals or join organised excursions.

Immerse in the culture of Ghana

Ghana is a country of warmth, colour and rhythm – and your time outside the volunteer project is just as enriching as the work you do.

You’ll have the chance to live like a local, discover traditional West African culture and explore a country filled with historical landmarks, natural beauty and vibrant markets.

Accra: Ghana’s capital is buzzing with life. Visit Independence Square, explore the Makola Market or relax at Labadi Beach. The city offers a fascinating mix of colonial history and modern Ghanaian culture.

Cape Coast: Travel to this historic seaside town to tour Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle – powerful reminders of Ghana’s role in the transatlantic slave trade. The area is also known for its beautiful beaches and laid-back vibe.

Kakum National Park: Just north of Cape Coast, this tropical rainforest is home to a famous canopy walk, where you can walk above the treetops and spot rare wildlife.

Volta Region: Discover waterfalls, mountain hikes and peaceful villages. This area is great for nature lovers and those wanting a deeper look into traditional Ghanaian life.

Local Life: Whether you’re learning to cook Ghanaian dishes, trying out traditional drumming and dance or chatting with your host community, every day brings a new cultural experience. Volunteers often find themselves welcomed into local families, forming bonds that last long after the program ends.

Your weekends are free to explore, relax or join group trips. From bustling cities to quiet villages, Ghana offers something for everyone – history, adventure, connection and discovery.

Suggested Weekend Travel Options

Explore the Mole National Park

Ghana is popular among travelers for its diverse wildlife, thick forests, secluded beaches, and old forts. Volunteers working in Accra spend time in Accra and explore the city or can also head out to Cape Coast to relax on the beautiful beaches. You can also go for the local market visit with your hosts, over the weekend, in case you wish to take a closer look at the community and how it functions. You can also prepare your own travel bucket list and share it with us – we shall help you with planning!

Explore the Mole National Park – Located in Northern Ghana, this is the country’s largest national park and it totally deserves a visit as you’ll find the widest range of wildlife here. Because of the lack of predators, safaris can be done on foot – a unique experience that is quite different from the vehicle safaris in southern and eastern Africa. To actually walk so close to elephants is an exhilarating experience you will not ever forget!

Visit the Boabeng Fiema Monkey Sanctuary – Cool off in high pitched waterfalls and enjoy the freshness of nature while exploring the Boabeng Fiema Monkey Sanctuary. As the name suggests, you’ll get to spot several primates in the wilderness, but not just that – you’ll get to soak in the beauty of nature, seeking a much-needed break during the weekends.

Visit Kakum National Park – This is a beautiful and unique wildlife reserve located in the Western Region of Ghana. Situated near the town of Elmina, the park is approximately a 30-minute drive from the historic Cape Coast, which is known for its cultural and colonial significance. Kokum National Park is one of Ghana’s premier national parks and is renowned for its stunning tropical rainforest, diverse wildlife, and the Canopy Walkway, a popular tourist attraction.

If you have anything else in your bucket list or planning to go & explore any of the above-mentioned places, you can simply get in touch with our Travel Experts, who can guide you better in planning your weekend tours. Drop us an email at operations@volunteeringsolutions.com mentioning your choice of weekend adventures, and we shall cater your needs.
