Six of the world’s seven sea turtle species are threatened or endangered — and hands-on volunteers make a measurable difference to hatchling survival. What will you do as a turtle conservation volunteer?
- Care for rescued and injured turtles at hatcheries and rehabilitation tanks — feeding, tank cleaning and health checks.
- Protect nests from poaching and predators, and relocate at-risk clutches to guarded hatcheries.
- Join beach patrols and cleanups so nesting females and emerging hatchlings have a safe shoreline.
- Record monitoring data that feeds real conservation research.
- Help release hatchlings — the moment every turtle volunteer remembers.
Where can you volunteer with sea turtles?
Sri Lanka — Kosgoda & Galle. Work at the famous Kosgoda hatchery from £425 a week, or combine turtles with wider marine conservation from £637.
Bali — Serangan. Turtle rescue and rehabilitation on Bali’s turtle island, from £848.
Costa Rica — Osa Peninsula & Puerto Viejo. Night patrols on some of the Pacific’s most important nesting beaches from £625, or a turtles-wildlife-permaculture combination from £1,043.
Madagascar — Nosy Komba. Sea turtle monitoring around an Indian Ocean island from £527.

Volunteering with sea turtles: frequently asked questions
How much does turtle conservation volunteering cost?
Programmes start from £425 for a week in Sri Lanka, with most projects between £425 and £1,063 depending on destination and duration. Fees include accommodation, meals and in-country support.
Do I need experience or diving qualifications?
No experience is needed for hatchery, beach patrol and monitoring work — training is provided on arrival. Only the Tanzania scuba project involves diving, and dive training is part of that programme.
Where can I volunteer with sea turtles?

When is turtle nesting season?
It varies by coast and species — between the five destinations there is meaningful turtle work year-round, from nesting patrols to hatchery care and rehabilitation. Ask our advisors which beach fits your dates.
Is volunteering at a turtle hatchery ethical?
Reputable hatcheries exist because poaching and beach development destroy unprotected nests. Ethical projects limit handling, follow conservation protocols and release hatchlings promptly — the standards our partner projects work to.
