Orphanage Volunteer Program in Kandy - Sri Lanka

Volunteer at an orphanage in Kandy - Sri LankaVolunteers work with children at an orphanage in Kandy In Sri Lanka.  All the children go to school in the morning and return to the orphanage in the afternoon. Volunteers help out with the cleaning and day to day care of the orphanage by helping our the local orphanage staff during the time children are at school in the morning. After 02 .00 pm children will be returning from the schools and participants can get together with them and play games and teach some basic English to them. During Month of April and December schools will be close for holidays and the participants have a full day to be with the children 

Volunteers could also be placed at the disabled children orphanage where, the orphanage functions all day. Volunteers help out with the staff and work with children, in cleaning, playing games, doing activities, drawing, art and craft etc. Volunteers are expected to have patience when they are working with children and always obey the rules and the regulations of the orphanage.

Volunteers start their program by taking part in the Orientation Week which takes place in Kandy.All volunteers are picked up from the airport in Colombo and driven to Kandy for the Orientation Week.This is an important part of the program where volunteers get to meet other participants and also know more about the country, meet the local people, taste the food and learn about the Sri Lankan traditions and languages. Volunteers need to note that attending the Orientation Week before joining the project is necessary and they need to plan their arrival as per that.

The Orientation week usually has the following components :-

Introduction to the Program and facts about Sri Lanka such as culture and history, cultural shock, do’s and don'ts, habits & behaviors,Sri Lankan food, dance and music, etc
 
Language Skills: A first contact with Sri Lankan language, in which volunteers will learn a few sentences and vocabulary to get by.  
 
Information: Lots of new things are introduced to the volunteers including yoga sessions, cooking, Henna painting, project work, customs & habits, technical information, emergency situations.  
 
Local sight seeing : Volunteers are given a tour of Kandy, the best markets and tourist sights where volunteers can interact with local people.

Program Requirements

Volunteers must be 17 years or older at the beginning of the program. Volunteers need to have an open mind and flexible attitude for working in a new and different environment. Volunteers need to have some discipline as the young monks lead a simple and disciplined life. 
 

Project Location

The project placement is located in the picturesque city of Kandy in Central Sri Lanka. Kandy is one of the most popular tourist areas of Sri Lanka and is visited regularly by foreign tourists from around the world. It is also close to Nuwara Eliya which is famous for its tea plantations.
 

What we provide

Airport Receive/ Transfer: Volunteers are picked up from the Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo by the by the local coordinator or representative. The cost of transportation from the airport to Kandy is included in the program fee paid by the volunteers.
 
Orientation: All volunteers are given a week long orientation about their project and the location by the local coordinator. Areas like culture, greetings, locations, transportation, safety and volunteer placements are given during the orientation. The Orientation is for 1 week and is a part of your program.
 
Lodging: Accommodation is provided with a local Sri Lankan volunteers house. You will have your individual room or share it with other volunteers. The accommodation would be clean and comfortable. The house has all basic and modern amenities for your comfort.
 
Food: Food will be basic Sri Lankan food. But you can bring your own food and cooking facility will be available. ( will be providing 02 meals a day- Breakfast and Dinner) to all volunteers.

In – Country travel assistance: Volunteers are assisted by the local staff and coordinators for any kind of assistance they need for their travel arrangements. The local coordinators will be happy to assist you in making travel arrangements to any destination within Sri Lanka.
 
In-country support: 24 hours support provided by our local staff. You will be provided with the contact details of the local coordinator and staff who will be contactable 24 hrs once you are in country.
 
Pre-departure information: After we receive full and final payment all participants are provided by a pre-departure information booklet which will have all vital information about your program. The Pre Departure Information Booklet provides the complete details of the country, project locations, Visas, Immunizations, Things to Pack list, Accommodations, Contact Information etc.

Start Dates 

Volunteers can begin their project placement on any Monday of the month. Volunteers should arrive one day prior to their project start date.

Does Volunteering Solutions help with Visa?

Receiving a tourist visa for tourism purpose is the volunteer's responsibility. Volunteering Solutions strongly recommends all volunteers to apply and get a tourist visa before departing for Sri Lanka. If needed, Volunteering Solutions do provide with written document which would help volunteers in getting the Visa.

When should I apply for the volunteer programs in Sri Lanka?

We are able to offer placements from any Monday of each month year round. Because of the increasing volume of applications, participants are requested to apply in advance to secure their spots.

How long does it take to process my application?

Once you have applied, we will send you details of your placement usually within 7-10 working days.

When do I need to arrive in Sri Lanka for my program? What will happen once I arrive in Sri Lanka?

All volunteers need to arrive one day before their program start date. Volunteers are picked up from the Bandaranaike International Airport by the local coordinator or representative. Those volunteers who are arriving overland or are already in Sri Lanka will be picked up from the bus station or at a meeting point decided beforehand.

How do I get to the program location?

Your country coordinator will take you to your placement and introduce you to everyone after giving you a basic orientation about the program/city/culture etc.

I want to know more about accommodation arrangements?

We provide you with accommodation from your start date to the end of the program. Accommodation will either be in the volunteer’s home or with a host family. Accommodation is shared along with other volunteers. You need to bring your own toiletries, mosquito net and sleeping bag.

Are there any necessary requirements to participate in the Sri Lanka-based volunteer programs?

The only qualifications are: -

-- The volunteer should bring energy and enthusiasm to make a difference.
-- Be in good health.

What immunizations/vaccinations will I need?

We recommend you speak to your doctor before coming. The following are recommended vaccinations: -
  1. Hepatitis A and B
  2. Typhoid
 

Are there more expenses once I arrive in Sri Lanka?

Your program fee covers you for food, accommodation, airport pick up, Orientation, Pre departure information and in country staff support. You will need to cover yourself for your personal expenses, such as traveling, telephone, internet, shopping, sightseeing etc. However you should carry around $40 - $50 per week for your basic personal expenses, such as water, local transport, phone etc.

Is there phone and internet available on projects?

Yes there is usually a phone at every placement we provide. However you will have to use Internet café’s to use Internet. It is strongly recommended that you carry a mobile phone while traveling to Sri Lanka. You can get international roaming or can simply buy a local sim-card from the airport when you arrive.

What hours will I volunteer every day?

Volunteers usually work for 5 to 6 hours a day depending on their program. You will have weekend off so you can go to travel on weekends. However some organizations will need you to work on some Saturdays as well.

Where can I change my money in Sri Lanka? Are there ATM’s in Sri Lanka?

You can change money in any bank or at the airport by showing your passport. There are ATM's located all around the city (Galle, Kandy, Ambalagonda and Kaegalle).

Can couples or families join the volunteer program?

Yes, couples and families are welcome to join our programs. We make special provisions for families joining our volunteering programs; we will be able to provide them with program placements and accommodations together.

What will be the food arrangement?

The host family provides two or three meals per day. Depending on your host family you will be provided with two or three meals a day. Lunch and dinner will be rice, a bowl of soup, fried meat (chicken, beef. pork or fish) and a lot of vegetables. Sri Lankan food is light and healthy and is not very spicy and hot.

Do I need to buy health insurance?

What sorts of clothes are required for Sri Lanka?

Lightweight clothing and rainwear is recommended as well as warmer clothing for the evenings (light jacket and/or light sweaters). A pair of walking shoes is highly recommended as well.
