Safety, safeguarding and how we run programs

Every program runs through a local team we work with directly, not a placement resold through a middleman. That team meets you at the airport, leads your in-country orientation, and stays reachable for the length of your stay. Placements that involve children or vulnerable adults only go ahead once the volunteer has passed a background check, and accommodation is checked before it is used for volunteers for the first time. Before booking with any provider, it is worth asking exactly who runs the placement day to day, what happens if a program is cancelled or changed, and what safeguarding checks apply to work with children.

  • Airport pickup and an in-person orientation before project work begins
  • A named in-country coordinator, reachable 24/7 throughout your stay
  • Background checks for any placement involving children or vulnerable adults
  • Vetted accommodation, inspected before it is used for volunteers
  • Financial protection on your booking, plus free date changes up to 45 days before departure

What are volunteer abroad programs?

Volunteer abroad programs are structured overseas placements that let you give your time to a community, education, childcare, healthcare or conservation project — typically for one to 24 weeks — with accommodation, meals, in-country support and the placement all arranged for you. A program fee covers your stay and contributes to the project, so you can focus on making a difference. As a certified B Corporation, Volunteering Solutions offers 119 ethical, affordable programs across 23 countries in Asia, Africa, Europe, South America and Oceania.

Since 2007, more than 25,000 volunteers have travelled with Volunteering Solutions — rated 4.8/5 on independent reviews — with all-in program fees starting at $534 for the shortest stay, including the booking deposit, accommodation, meals, airport pickup and in-country support.

Popular types of volunteer abroad programs

Whatever cause matters most to you, there's a program to match:

  • Teaching & education — support lessons and activities in local schools and community centers.
  • Childcare — help care for and nurture children at community centers and daycares.
  • Wildlife & conservation — protect animals and habitats, from elephants and sea turtles to coral reefs.
  • Community development — work alongside local people on projects they have prioritised.
  • Women's empowerment — support skills, education and confidence-building for local women.
  • Medical & healthcare — observation-appropriate placements for healthcare and pre-med students.

Where can you volunteer abroad?

Our programs run across five regions, so you can match the cause you care about to a destination that excites you: Nepal, India, Thailand, Bali, Kenya, Tanzania, Ghana, South Africa, Peru, Costa Rica, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Vietnam, Philippines, Malaysia, Ecuador, Argentina, Morocco, Madagascar, Spain, Portugal, Ireland and New Zealand. Browse them all on our destinations page.

How much do volunteer abroad programs cost?

Volunteering Solutions is known for affordable, transparent pricing, with all-in fees starting from $534 for the shortest stay, booking deposit included. Your fee typically includes accommodation, meals, airport pickup, in-country support and a contribution to the project; international flights, insurance, visas and personal spending are extra. We publish a clear breakdown so you always know where your money goes. If you're a student, our guide to university funding for volunteering abroad covers grants, the Turing Scheme and scholarships, and our fundraising guide shows how to raise the rest.

Can you volunteer abroad for free? Fully funded programs explained

Truly fully funded volunteer abroad programs are rare and competitive — think Peace Corps, UN Volunteers or the EU Solidarity Corps, which usually ask for commitments of several months to two years. Most "free volunteering" listings you'll find online are work-exchanges: you receive a bed for a few hours of daily work, but travel, insurance, meals and any real project support are on you, and vetting varies widely.

A structured, affordable program sits in between: your fee covers accommodation, meals, airport pickup, orientation and a local team on call — from $534 all-in for the shortest stay. That is usually cheaper (and far more predictable) than organizing the same trip independently.

Ways to cut the cost further: many universities offer travel and service-learning grants that cover placement fees; group leaders travel at reduced rates on our group trips; returning volunteers get their booking fee waived; and most volunteers fundraise part of their fee — we provide a fundraising guide and letter templates when you book.

How long can you volunteer abroad for?

Programs run from 1 to 24 weeks, with rolling start dates throughout the year. Short-term placements from one or two weeks suit people with limited time, while longer stays — popular with gap-year travelers — let you build deeper relationships and see real progress on a project.

Who can volunteer abroad?

Most programs welcome volunteers aged 16 and over (18+ on some programs), with no previous experience or qualifications needed for the majority of projects — just enthusiasm and an open mind. There are options for everyone: teens and high-school students, university students, families, over-50s, and groups such as societies, clubs and corporate teams.

What's included in your program fee

Unlike a typical holiday, a volunteer abroad program fee is designed to take the stress out of traveling for a good cause. It generally covers your accommodation (usually a shared volunteer house or host family), meals, airport pickup, a pre-departure and in-country orientation, 24/7 local support, and a contribution to the project itself. International flights, travel insurance, visas, vaccinations and personal spending money are arranged and paid for separately. Because we publish a transparent breakdown, you always know exactly what your money supports.

What to expect on a volunteer abroad program

Most programs run Monday to Friday, leaving evenings and weekends free to relax, explore and travel. A typical day blends hands-on project work — teaching a class, caring for animals, supporting a community build — with time to immerse yourself in local life. You'll be met by our in-country team, settled into your accommodation, and supported throughout. Beyond the work itself, expect new friendships with fellow volunteers, genuine cultural exchange, and the kind of perspective and confidence that stays with you long after you return home.

How to choose the right volunteer abroad program

With so many providers out there, choose carefully. Look for a transparent, accountable organization (a B Corp certification is a strong signal), genuinely community-led and ethical projects, honest pricing with a clear breakdown of where your fee goes, and real in-country support. Be wary of anything that puts tourist photo-ops ahead of impact — for example hands-on captive-wildlife encounters or short-term orphanage placements. The best programs leave the host community better off, not just the volunteer.

Good to know

Volunteering abroad: frequently asked questions

What are volunteer abroad programs?

A volunteer abroad program is a structured placement that comes with a local team, accommodation, meals and project support already arranged, so you start work rather than organize everything yourself. Across 119 programs in 23 countries, placements cover childcare, teaching, wildlife & animal care, community development, environment conservation and special needs care, running from 1 to 24 weeks with fees from $534. Every project is run through our own in-country teams, not sub-agents, and has been since 2007.

Who can volunteer abroad and what are the requirements?

Most placements accept volunteers from age 16, though some programs set a higher minimum of 18+ depending on the country and type of work. There is no upper age limit, and no previous experience or qualifications are required for most projects. Placements involving children require a background check, and medical placements are reserved for those studying or qualified in a health field. See our safeguarding policy for detail.

How much does a volunteer abroad program cost?

Fees start from $534 and typically cover accommodation, meals, airport pickup, in-country orientation and ongoing local support; flights, insurance, visas and vaccinations are arranged separately. A deposit of $249 secures your place, with the balance due later. We publish a full breakdown of where the fee goes so there are no surprises.

How long can I volunteer abroad for, and when do programs start?

Programs run from 1 to 24 weeks, with fixed start dates through the year — the next available date is 13 Sep 2026. Shorter stays of a week or two suit limited time off, while longer stays, common among gap-year travelers, allow deeper involvement in a single project. Check the start dates explorer for your chosen country.

Which countries can I volunteer in?

Programs run across India, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Peru, Costa Rica and 17 more countries, spanning Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America and Oceania, with India, South Africa, Sri Lanka and Tanzania among the busiest right now. Project types, minimum ages and fees differ by country, so it is worth comparing a few before deciding. Browse all destinations to see what is running where and when.

How safe are volunteer abroad programs?

Every placement runs through a vetted local team who meet you at the airport, lead an in-country orientation and stay reachable 24/7 for the length of your stay. Accommodation is checked before it is used, and placements working with children or vulnerable groups require a background check on the volunteer. We also hold financial protection so a booking is covered if a program is disrupted. Read our safeguarding policy for full detail.

What ethical boundaries do you follow for childcare and wildlife work?

Volunteers support local staff rather than take sole charge of a class or a child's care, and specialist placements such as medical work are observation and support-based, never hands-on clinical tasks. Wildlife placements are welfare-first: volunteers help with feeding, habitat upkeep and enrichment, not captive-animal encounters or photo opportunities with animals. These limits are set out in our responsible volunteer travel policy.

Do I need travel insurance to volunteer abroad?

Yes. Standard travel policies often exclude volunteer work, so you need cover that specifically lists volunteering, and manual labor if you are joining a construction or wildlife placement. This sits outside your program fee and is best arranged before you book flights. See our travel insurance guidance for what to check.

Do I need a visa to volunteer abroad?

In most cases yes, though requirements depend on your passport and destination — some countries offer a visa on arrival or a simple e-visa, others need approval in advance. Visas, like flights and insurance, sit outside your program fee. Once your dates are confirmed, our team sends a checklist specific to your program and nationality.

What vaccinations do I need before I travel?

Requirements vary by country and are best confirmed with a travel clinic well before departure, since some destinations call for specific vaccinations or malaria prevention. This is arranged and paid for separately from your program fee. Your placement confirmation includes country-specific guidance so you know exactly what to raise with your doctor.

How do I choose the right volunteer abroad program or provider?

Look for independent accountability, a transparent breakdown of what your fee covers, placements run by the provider's own local team rather than resold to a sub-agent, and clear limits on what volunteers do with children or animals. We are a certified B Corp and have run our own placements since 2007.

Can I volunteer abroad for free, and how do I book?

Genuinely free, fully funded placements are rare and usually require a lengthy commitment through schemes such as government or UN volunteer corps; most "free" listings online are informal work-exchanges with little support or vetting. A structured program with Volunteering Solutions costs from $534, covers accommodation, meals and support, and is booked with a $249 deposit, balance due later. See our flexible booking policy for free date changes.
