What do our past volunteers say?

“The local coordinators were amazing, completely dedicated to what they do. The work was fulfilling, varied, and flexible. I learned a lot, through the voluntary projects, our conversations with the local coordinator, and the sightseeing. I recommend this program to any volunteers who wish to contribute to some of the most vulnerable communities, in a location that’s off the beaten track.” – Victoria P, Volunteer in Uganda

Frequently asked questions

What is construction and building volunteering abroad?
Construction volunteering abroad involves helping build or improve community facilities such as schools, homes and sanitation alongside local builders. Volunteering Solutions runs these as community-led, ethical projects, with orientation on arrival and 24/7 support from our in-country teams.
Do I need building experience or qualifications?
No prior construction experience is needed, as local skilled workers lead the technical tasks and guide volunteers. You should be aged 17 or above, reasonably fit and willing to do hands-on manual work such as mixing, painting and basic labouring.
What kind of work will I actually do?
Tasks vary by project but often include laying bricks, plastering, painting, mixing concrete and helping renovate schools or community buildings. Projects run across 24 countries in Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin America, always supporting genuine local needs.
How much does a construction project cost and how long does it run?
Programmes run from 1 to 24 weeks, with fees from around US$250 per week on the most affordable options, typically including accommodation, meals, airport pickup and in-country support. Flights, insurance and visas are extra, so check the programme pages for current pricing.
Are construction volunteer projects ethical?
Yes. Our projects are community-led, addressing infrastructure that local people have identified as priorities, and they complement rather than replace local labour. As a certified B Corporation, we focus on lasting community benefit rather than short-term volunteer experiences.
