The region around Valencia is a patchwork of protected coastline, freshwater wetlands and Mediterranean woodland — and keeping it healthy takes constant, hands-on work. The Environmental & Marine Conservation programme places volunteers with local ecological groups and sanctuaries tackling exactly that, so you can trade the classroom or office for a season in the field.
Through our local partner you’ll join projects in and around Valencia’s natural areas: planting native trees and clearing invasive species in the Turia park and Albufera wetlands, cleaning beaches and gathering micro-plastic data along the coast, or helping care for rescued animals at a sanctuary. The work is practical and physical, the settings are beautiful, and the contribution is real — you’ll finish each day tired, sun-warmed and able to see what you’ve achieved.
It’s an ideal programme for nature-lovers, environmental-science and biology students, and anyone who would rather spend their time abroad outdoors than in. Placements run from two weeks to a full year around Valencia’s protected areas, and the Mediterranean climate means comfortable fieldwork for most of the year. No specialist background is needed — just a willingness to get your hands dirty and a commitment of around 20 hours a week.
As with our other Valencia programmes, you can add accredited Spanish lessons through our Instituto Cervantes–recognised partner, and schedules can be adjusted if you need extra hours to satisfy a university placement or credit.
A typical day
Your role
Tasks vary with the season and the partner project, but volunteers typically help with:
- Ecosystem maintenance — planting native trees, removing invasive species, and helping restore woodland and riverbank habitats.
- Marine & coastal protection — organised beach and seabed clean-ups and collecting micro-plastic and water-quality data that feeds into local research.
- Animal sanctuaries — basic care for rescued animals, cleaning enclosures and general facility upkeep.
You’ll work as part of a team under the guidance of local conservation staff, following their lead on safety and technique.
A typical week
Volunteers commit around 20 hours per week, Monday to Friday, usually on a morning shift (roughly 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.) to take advantage of the cooler temperatures and long daylight. Schedules are flexible and can be extended if a university programme requires more field hours. Afternoons, evenings and weekends are yours.
Accommodation & meals
Airport Pickup
Pick up and transfer service (airport, train station or bus station of Valencia) is provided to the volunteers.
Orientation
The local team will provide a program orientation, followed by a walking tour of Valencia’s city centre, including the main landmarks and historic squares of the Old Town.
Accommodation
Participants are provided accommodation with a Spanish host family. Our team members in Valencia have have years of experience working with a wide range of host families, all of whom have extensive experience hosting international students. They understand the cultural challenges, language barriers, and other difficulties that international participants may face when living in a new country and culture.
Homestay accommodation may include:
• A single room and shared living room.
• A shared room (*with another participant) and shared common areas.
*You must request this if you are coming with friends on the same or similar dates.
To find the right host family, we ask students to complete a questionnaire before we begin the search. This allows us to answer questions about your diet, family preferences, pets, hobbies, interests, and more. This helps us get to know you, consider your requirements, and place you with a family we believe will provide you with an optimal and
unforgettable Spanish experience!
Families are chosen for their hospitality and their experience of hosting international students, and they’re briefed on your dietary needs and interests before you arrive. Living with a host family means you speak Spanish from morning to night and always have someone local to turn to — the easiest way to settle in and beat any homesickness.
Meals
With a host family you will be provided with all home cooked meals everyday. Food allergies and dietary preferences can be taken into account.
A few local notes: in Spain clothes are usually air-dried rather than tumble-dried, and heating and air conditioning are used sparingly — fans are provided and the Mediterranean breeze does most of the work.
During your Free time
Valencia is compact enough to feel like home within days, yet packed with things to do. Spend your free hours on the beach, in the Turia Gardens, or exploring the tapas bars and markets of the Old Town, and use your weekends to discover the rest of Spain by high-speed train. Our local team also organises optional get-togethers so you can make friends with other international volunteers.

Frequently asked questions
Who can join this programme?
The programme welcomes volunteers aged 18 and over. It’s especially popular with environmental-science and biology students, nature enthusiasts and gap-year travellers. No specialist experience is required — just reasonable physical fitness for outdoor work and a genuine care for the environment.
Is the work physically demanding?
It’s active, outdoor work — planting, clearing, cleaning and lifting — but it’s paced sensibly and always guided by local staff. You should be comfortable being on your feet outdoors for a morning shift.
When can I start and how long can I stay?
Placements run from 2 weeks to 12 months year-round, with the Mediterranean climate keeping fieldwork comfortable through most seasons. The shared-apartment option requires a minimum stay of 4 weeks.
Do I need to speak Spanish?
No — conservation work is very hands-on and easy to join with little Spanish. Accredited Spanish classes are available as an add-on if you’d like to learn while you’re here.
