A day on an elephant program starts with preparing food — chopping, weighing and delivering it to the herd — then feeding, walking alongside the elephants to grazing and rest areas, and helping keepers maintain enclosures and plant elephant grass. You will learn about welfare-based care and why sanctuaries reject entertainment, and no experience is needed: volunteers aged 17+ (18+ on some programs) join with full training from local keepers on arrival. What will you do as an elephant volunteer?
- Prepare food and help with feeding — elephants eat up to 10% of their body weight a day, so there is always work to do.
- Walk with the elephants to grazing and bathing spots, observing natural herd behavior up close.

Is it ethical to volunteer with elephants?
It depends entirely on the project. Elephant riding, performances and pay-to-bathe photo encounters harm the animals — welfare-first sanctuaries let elephants be elephants, and volunteers support the people who care for them. Keeping elephant volunteering ethical
Every project we work with is welfare-first: the elephants are rescued or retired, not performing, and any contact is led by the animals and their keepers rather than by visitors. Volunteers support the keepers who know each elephant's history and temperament — they do not take sole charge of an animal, direct its movements for a photo, or take part in anything resembling tourist entertainment. Projects are chosen for long-term care commitments, not for how close they let visitors get.

Do I need prior animal-care experience to volunteer with elephants?
No. Both programs are designed for first-time volunteers, and keepers provide full training on arrival covering feeding, safe distances and daily routines. What matters more is reasonable fitness for outdoor work and a willingness to follow the keepers' lead rather than direct the elephants yourself.
How do I book, and can I change my dates later?
You can book online with a $249 deposit; the balance is due closer to departure. If your plans change, our flexible booking policy allows free date changes up to 45 days before your start date. We recommend booking early since elephant programs run on fixed dates rather than rolling starts.
