Medical placements

Shadow doctors and support nursing teams at Arusha and Moshi community hospitals. Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC) has excellent teaching-hospital partnerships. For medical, nursing and allied-health students. From £495 for 2 weeks.

Community construction

Support school-expansion and community-infrastructure projects (classrooms, water-tank installations) alongside local builders. Physical work; reasonable fitness needed. From £425 for 2 weeks.

Zanzibar coastal & marine programmes

Marine conservation and English teaching in coastal Zanzibari villages — reef monitoring, mangrove replanting, primary-school English support. From £495 for 2 weeks (Zanzibar is more expensive than mainland due to accommodation costs).

Wildlife & anti-poaching

Conservation support at partner reserves near Arusha. Includes anti-poaching awareness education in surrounding villages. Not for wildlife-handling; ethical protocols throughout. From £620 for 2 weeks.

UK-specific practicalities

Visa

UK passport holders get visa on arrival at Kilimanjaro or Dar es Salaam airport. US$50 in cash preferred (some airports accept card). Alternatively apply online in advance via Tanzania’s e-visa system. Passport must have 6+ months validity and 2 blank pages.

Insurance

Must cover volunteering AND (if trekking) altitude activities up to 6,000m for Kilimanjaro. UK providers we recommend:

• World Nomads — best for combining programme + Kilimanjaro; explicit altitude cover.
• Endsleigh Gap Year — good baseline, add altitude cover if Kili planned.
• Alpine & Trek by Sports Cover Direct — specialised trekking cover.

Vaccinations

Yellow Fever certificate required if entering from Kenya (most UK-to-Tanzania flights via Nairobi trigger this). Recommended: Typhoid, Hepatitis A, Tetanus, and anti-malaria prophylaxis. Rabies boosters if wildlife programme.

The three big extensions

Kilimanjaro (5,895m) — 6-7 days
The most-booked add-on. Machame route (7 days) has best acclimatisation and highest success rate (~85%). Marangu (5 days) is cheaper but lower success (~50-65%). Costs £1,600-2,400 through licensed operators — book independently or through us. October-March is dry season; June-October also good.

Serengeti + Ngorongoro — 3-5 days
The classic East African safari. From Arusha, drive to Ngorongoro Crater (Africa’s densest wildlife), then into the Serengeti. £800-1,400 for 3-4 days including 4×4 with guide, park fees, accommodation. July-September is wildebeest migration.

Zanzibar — 4-7 days
Cheap flight from Kilimanjaro (~£100 return), then beach or Stone Town history. £350-700 for 4-5 days. December-February and June-October are best weather.

Is Tanzania safe for UK volunteers?

Broadly yes. Standard FCDO advice applies — check gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/tanzania. Our programmes have run since 2014 without a serious safety incident. Accommodation vetted; airport pickup included; 24/7 coordinator contact.

The ethics

• No orphanage placements. Never have.
• No wildlife-handling programmes. Conservation work only involves observation, tracking, and community education.
