Volunteer in Malaysia: The Complete 2026-27 Guide

Our Malaysia programs are really Borneo programs — rainforest, river and some of the richest biodiversity on earth. This is the destination for volunteers who want their conservation work surrounded by hornbills and macaques, plus a purpose-built Family Volunteer Adventure for parents travelling with kids.

Volunteer programs in Malaysia

Wildlife conservation in Borneo’s rainforest (from $975), the Borneo Wildlife Safari & Volunteering Experience (from $1,595) combining project work with guided wildlife travel, and the Family Volunteer Adventure (from $975) built for families. All include housing, meals and full support — live prices on the Malaysia programs page. You can also browse related family volunteer programs.

How much does volunteering in Malaysia cost?

Program fees include accommodation, meals, airport pickup, orientation and 24/7 in-country support — the Malaysia page shows live prices in your currency for every duration. Budget separately for flights, insurance and weekend travel. As with all our destinations, longer stays bring the per-week cost down sharply.

When is the best time to volunteer in Malaysia?

Borneo is equatorial: warm and humid year-round, with March-October generally drier. Wildlife viewing is good in every month; river levels and fruiting seasons change what you see, not whether you see it.

Visas and getting there

Most nationalities including the UK, EU and US enter Malaysia visa-free for up to 90 days. We confirm requirements for your nationality after you apply. Airport pickup is included in every program, and your in-country coordinator confirms arrival details before you fly.

Weekends and travel

Sepilok’s orangutan sanctuary, Kinabalu National Park, bat caves and night markets in Kota Kinabalu or Sandakan — and Kuala Lumpur is a cheap flight if you want the big city bookend.

Is it safe, and who can join?

Volunteers live in vetted accommodation with a coordinator on call around the clock, and every placement operates under our safeguarding policy. The minimum age is 17 for most placements with no upper limit — students, career-breakers, families and retirees all join our Malaysia programs. Check our insurance guidance before you book flights.

Frequently asked questions

How long can I volunteer in Malaysia?

From one week to twelve weeks or more — most volunteers stay two to four weeks, and longer stays deepen both impact and experience.

Do I need experience?

No — all placements include orientation and on-project training. Specific skills (medical, teaching) unlock more responsibility where relevant.

What’s included in the fee?

Accommodation, meals, airport pickup, orientation, project placement and 24/7 in-country support. Flights and insurance are separate.
