Here’s what your volunteering experience in South Africa will look like:

Before you go
Once you apply, you’ll receive all the pre-departure details – including visa guidance, a full packing list, safety advice and program specifics.

Arrival
Fly into Cape Town International Airport, where you’ll be greeted by a local team member and transferred to your accommodation. Orientation happens within the first two days and covers safety, culture, project info and a city tour.

Accommodation & meals
You’ll stay in a volunteer house in Cape Town, complete with Wi-Fi, shared rooms and basic amenities. Meals are provided on weekdays – usually a mix of local and Western dishes.

Daily life
Monday to Friday you’ll be at your placement, with hours depending on your project. Afternoons and weekends are free to explore South Africa’s beaches, national parks and buzzing city life.

Eligibility & Requirements

Who can volunteer in South Africa?
Anyone aged 17 and over can join the programme. No specific qualifications are required – just enthusiasm and a willingness to help.

Do I need prior experience to volunteer?
Not at all. Most programmes are open to everyone, and training or guidance is provided. Some experience may be helpful for the medical internship.

Can I volunteer as part of a group?
Yes! Groups of friends, university societies and even corporate teams are welcome. We can tailor your experience based on group size and preferences.

Is there an age limit to volunteer?
There’s no upper age limit, but most volunteers are between 17–30. If you’re older and fit for travel, you’re very welcome to join.

Accommodation, Meals & Safety

Where do volunteers stay?
You’ll stay in a fully-equipped volunteer house in Cape Town, sharing with other volunteers from around the world. It’s safe, social and conveniently located.

Are meals included in the programme?
Yes – breakfast and dinner are provided from Monday to Friday. You’ll have access to a kitchen if you want to cook on weekends.

Is the accommodation safe?
Absolutely. The volunteer house is in a secure area with 24/7 support from local coordinators.

Will I have access to Wi-Fi and laundry?
Yes, the accommodation has Wi-Fi and laundry facilities are available nearby or within the house (depending on location).

Travel, Arrival & Visas

How do I get to Cape Town?
You should book a flight to Cape Town International Airport (CPT). Airport pickup is included in your programme fee.

Will someone pick me up at the airport?
Yes – you’ll be picked up by a VolSol team member and taken directly to your accommodation.

Do I need a visa to volunteer in South Africa?
Most nationalities can enter on a tourist visa valid for up to 90 days. We’ll advise you on the process depending on your country of residence and duration of stay.

When should I arrive for the programme?
Most volunteers arrive on weekends, usually Saturday or Sunday. Orientation takes place on Monday.

Programme Costs & Inclusions

What’s included in the programme fee?
The fee includes accommodation, weekday meals, airport pickup, orientation, placement, 24/7 support and a certificate upon completion.

What’s not included?
Flights, travel insurance, weekend meals and personal expenses aren’t included.

Are there any additional costs I should know about?
You may want to budget for excursions, transportation, souvenirs and meals on weekends.

Can I travel during weekends?
Yes – weekends are free! Popular trips include safaris, Table Mountain hikes, the Garden Route, Cape Winelands and more.

Will I meet other volunteers?
Definitely. You’ll live and work with volunteers from around the world, making it a great way to build friendships and share your experience.

Are there cultural activities or excursions?
Yes – local team members can help you plan trips, book activities or explore cultural events like township tours and local markets.

Health & Safety

Is South Africa safe for volunteers?
VolSol has been operating safely in South Africa for years. You’ll receive a full safety briefing, and our local coordinators are always available to support you.

Do I need vaccinations to volunteer?
It’s recommended you check with your GP or a travel clinic about vaccines for South Africa. Common ones include Hep A, Typhoid and Tetanus.

What if I have dietary restrictions?
Let us know in advance – the local team can usually cater to vegetarian, vegan and other dietary needs.

What kind of insurance do I need?
You’ll need comprehensive travel insurance that covers health, accidents and theft. We can suggest providers if needed.

Make the most of your free time while volunteering in South Africa. Go for the wildlife safari during the weekends, or spend time relaxing on the beaches of Cape Town.
