Volunteer Opportunities in Madagascar

All programs in Madagascar are focused on conservation and sustainability, giving you the chance to play an active role in protecting the island’s unique ecosystems:

  • Marine Conservation

Based in the coastal region of Nosy Komba, volunteers work on coral reef monitoring, beach clean-ups, marine biodiversity surveys and sustainable fishing education in local communities.

  • Forest Conservation

Support long-term environmental research in forest areas by tracking species, monitoring habitats and collecting data on endemic wildlife such as lemurs, chameleons and birds.

  • Environmental Education

Raise awareness in local schools and communities by delivering workshops and educational sessions focused on environmental protection and sustainable living.

Make a Positive Impact in Madagascar

Madagascar is home to some of the world’s most endangered species and fragile ecosystems. Through your conservation work, you’ll contribute to efforts that protect marine and terrestrial biodiversity, promote environmental awareness and support local sustainability efforts.

These programs are ideal for anyone passionate about wildlife, ecology and climate action – whether you’re a student, gap year traveler or eco-conscious adventurer.

What to Expect When You Volunteer in Madagascar

  • Accommodation:
Volunteers live in basic, eco-friendly shared houses near the project sites, such as on the island of Nosy Komba. Facilities are rustic but comfortable, and staying close to nature is part of the experience.

  • Meals:
Three meals are provided daily – typically vegetarian and locally sourced. Expect rice, vegetables, beans, tropical fruits and the occasional seafood.

  • Work:
Volunteer activities run Monday to Friday, with tasks depending on your program. Expect early starts and field-based work, especially for conservation projects.

  • Free Time:
Use your evenings and weekends to explore local villages, relax by the beach or go snorkelling and hiking. Many volunteers also visit nearby islands or take part in group excursions.

Immerse in the Culture of Madagascar

Madagascar offers a rare chance to disconnect from the fast pace of modern life and experience a culture shaped by island traditions, music, dance and nature.

  • Nosy Komba: A peaceful volcanic island where volunteers live and work. Spend your free time hiking, swimming or learning traditional Malagasy crafts.
  • Lokobe Reserve: A protected rainforest known for its lemurs, colourful frogs and exotic flora.
  • Hell-Ville (Nosy Be): Visit this small port town for local markets, street food and internet cafes.
  • Beach Hopping & Snorkelling: Discover Madagascar’s crystal-clear waters and coral reefs teeming with marine life.

Suggested Weekend Travel Options

Madagascar, undoubtedly, is an enchanting country and there’s so much to do that you might just fall short of time. The volunteering project location is extremely beautiful in itself, and you can simply walk along the beaches or just go for a swim on the weekends. But in case you are enthusiastic enough to head out and explore, here are a few options that you can choose from!

Walk around the avenue of Baobabs – Needless to say, this is the place of which you have seen innumerable photographs – and it’s also the most favorite place of the travelers. As its name suggests, the Avenue of the Baobabs is a stretch of giant baobab trees believed to be up to 800 years old, located near the Kirindy Mitea National Park, which sits along Madagascar’s west coast. This natural wonder will surely take your breath away!

Explore Tsingy de Bemaraha Strict Nature Reserve – Marked as a UNESCO Heritage Site for being home to impressive geological structures and a variety of endangered species, you’ll get to spot the towering gray limestone pinnacles, which stand up to 328 feet tall and wonder how nature can be so creative! You’ll also get to spot various species of Lemurs, reptiles, and birds.

Hike through the Isalo National Park – Described by many as one of the best National Parks of Madagascar, you can go for a hike in the Isalo National Park and cool yourself down at one of the many natural swimming pools! A tropical paradise, this would definitely be the adventurous world you are seeking to explore.
