You spend your days at a day center or school, supporting children and adults with physical, intellectual or developmental disabilities. Under the direction of local staff, you help run activities such as games, craft, basic lessons and simple motor-skills or sensory exercises. The aim is to give trained carers extra hands, not to replace them, so you always work alongside a supervisor. Placements run in Spain, India, Peru and Portugal and other locations across Spain, India, Peru, Portugal, Tanzania, Thailand and Vietnam.

These placements suit patient, adaptable volunteers aged 17+, with 18+ required on some programs. No formal qualifications are needed, though experience in care, therapy or special education is useful and specifically valued on certain placements. You should be comfortable with routine, repetition and close physical support, and willing to take direction from local staff rather than lead activities yourself. A clean background check is required before you join.

Typical days include helping with arrival routines, running games and craft sessions, supporting basic lessons, and assisting with motor-skills, sensory or vocational activities depending on the center. Some placements, such as the Portugal surf program, add inclusive sport sessions built around the same welfare-first approach. You work alongside qualified carers or teachers throughout, following their lead on each individual's needs rather than deciding on your own.

Fees start from $550, secured with a $249 deposit, and typically cover accommodation, meals, airport pickup and 24/7 in-country support.
