Here is the honest UK guide: what programmes run, real GBP costs, when to go, visas, and safety.

Why Kenya

Kenya offers three things that make it consistently our most-booked African destination for UK volunteers:

• Structured programmes with strong in-country teams. Nairobi, Nakuru and Mombasa each have long-established local coordinators who’ve been with Volunteering Solutions for 8-12 years. Airport pickup, orientation, weekly check-ins are all standard.
• Meaningful community projects. Kenya’s Maasai and coastal communities have real, sustained roles for volunteer teachers, healthcare shadows, and youth-sports coaches. Two-to-eight-week placements have measurable impact when structured properly.
• Safari bundling. Roughly two-thirds of UK Kenya volunteers extend their trip with 3-7 days of safari — Maasai Mara, Nakuru, Amboseli. Because you’re already in country, the safari cost drops dramatically (£350-700 for 3-4 days including guide, park fees, accommodation).

Our largest Kenya programme. Work in NGO-run schools in Nairobi’s peri-urban areas, Nakuru, or in Maasai villages 2 hours outside Nairobi. Support Kenyan teachers with English, maths and sport for children aged 6-14. Monday to Friday, weekends free. No teaching qualification needed. From £380 for 2 weeks, £1,240 for 8 weeks.

Medical & healthcare

Shadow doctors and nurses at community health centres in Nairobi or coastal areas. For medical, nursing and allied-health students; scope depends on qualification. Requires proof of study or professional registration. From £495 for 2 weeks.

Wildlife & anti-poaching support

Conservation programme at partner sanctuaries near Nairobi and in the Rift Valley. Wildlife feeding, enclosure maintenance, anti-poaching community awareness education. No riding, ethical protocols throughout. From £580 for 2 weeks.

Sports coaching

Youth football, basketball and athletics coaching in Nairobi community projects. Best for volunteers with a sports background or coaching qualification (not required, but useful). From £380 for 2 weeks.

Women’s empowerment

Skills training and small-business support at women’s cooperatives near Nakuru. Best with a 4-week minimum for meaningful engagement. From £680 for 4 weeks.

UK-specific practicalities

Visa

UK passport holders need a Kenya eTA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) — apply online at etakenya.go.ke 3-7 days before travel. Cost approx US$51, valid for 90 days from arrival. Passport must have 6+ months validity.

Insurance

Must cover volunteer work AND (if extending with safari) high-altitude game drives + wildlife activities. UK providers that reliably cover Kenya:

Vaccinations

Yellow Fever certificate is required for Kenya entry (single vaccination, valid life). Book 10+ days before travel. Also recommended: Typhoid, Hepatitis A, Tetanus booster, and anti-malaria prophylaxis (Malarone, doxycycline or Lariam — GP will advise). Rabies boosters if wildlife programme.

Safari extensions — the real add-on

• Maasai Mara (3-4 days) — the classic, July-October best for the migration. £400-700 through local operators.
• Nakuru + Naivasha (2-3 days) — flamingos, rhinos, boat safari, cheaper alternative. £250-450.
• Amboseli (2-3 days) — elephants with Kilimanjaro backdrop. £300-500.
• Diani or Watamu beach (3-5 days) — coastal decompression before flying home. £150-350.

Is Kenya safe for UK volunteers?

Broadly yes with sensible precautions. Our Kenya programmes have run since 2012 without a serious safety incident. Points to know:

• Standard UK FCDO advice applies — check gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/kenya for current advisories (there are usually some for the Somali border region and coastal areas near Lamu — we don’t run programmes there).
• All accommodation is vetted and in areas the FCDO deems safe.
• Airport pickup included; 24/7 in-country coordinator contact.
• Solo female volunteers get a specific safety brief on transport, dress and evening protocol from our female Nairobi coordinator.

The ethics — what NOT to book

• Childcare centre placements — no legitimate provider offers these anymore. We don’t.
• “Lion-cub petting” or wildlife handling — anywhere that lets you cuddle or interact with cubs is not conservation. Ask directly what happens to the animals after handling.
• Programmes that promise “medical procedures for unqualified volunteers” — pre-med and undergraduate volunteers should only observe, not perform.
