Overview
The Teaching Volunteer Program in China, Beijing is dedicated to children from poor immigrant families working in the city. The placement is a primary school that has limited resources and depends a lot on skilled volunteers for support. Due to limited resources, the school authorities cannot afford to employ good English speaking teachers. Volunteers play a key role here by teaching English to the kids in the school.
The children in the school are taught English, Chinese, Mathematics, Physical Education and other activities. Volunteering as an English teacher in China - Beijing will give you a whole new perspective of this incredible country. Volunteers working in the Teaching Program do not need to be a qualified teacher, and should only have the desire to help and make a difference to the project.
Program Requirements
Volunteers must be 18 years or older at the time of joining the project. You need to have an open mind and a flexible attitude for working in a new and different environment. The volunteer should bring energy and enthusiasm to make a difference. The volunteer should bring energy and enthusiasm to make a difference and have a passion for working with children. Participants should have no criminal convictions and should provide a clean criminal background check report. A parental consent form shall be required for Under 18 participants joining the program.
Volunteer Roles & Responsibilities
As a volunteer working in this project, you will be asked to help in a wide range of activities at the school placement depending on the age group of children and the needs of the project. Volunteer, typically, will be required to execute the following tasks;
- Teach in a fun and play way method.
- Help in improving the basic vocabulary and language skills of the students.
- Spend time with the children at school.
- Support the teachers in conducting classes.
- Provide assistance in school administrative works.
- Help design school curriculums and timetables.
- Teach English, music or paintings in the primary school or in kindergarten school according to your preference and teaching skills.
Volunteer Work Schedule
Volunteers joining the Teaching Volunteer Program in China, Beijing is required to follow a basic routine on a daily basis. This covers everything from meals to volunteer work and back. A generic daily schedule for volunteers is as follows;
- Monday: Arrival
- Tuesday: Orientation + visit to the placement for project introduction (meeting the staff, understanding the route, etc.). The orientation session will be conducted by the local coordinator, covering topic areas; such as safety, culture, language, places to visit, behavior, food, and other suggestion over things to do in Beijing.
- Wed to Fri: Volunteer Work
- Leave for the placement - 08:00 am
- Volunteer work - 09:00 am to 02:00 pm
- Breakfast - 07:00 am onwards
- Lunch - 11:30 onwards
- Dinner - 07:00 pm onwards
- Weekends: Free to explore the city
Volunteers need to manage their meals on own cost. There are a series of food options available in an around the volunteer accommodation as well as the placement center.

Living

Airport Transfer
Volunteers are picked up from the Beijing Capital International Airport by the local coordinator or representative arranged by the coordinator. Pickup will be provided between 8am - 5pm only.
Accommodation
Volunteers are provided accommodation in a youth hostel within the heart of Beijing. Featuring a terrace, a restaurant and a bar with a pool table, the hostel is within walking distance of Beijing Shifan and Youdian University. It is a 10-minute walk from Jishuitan Metro Station and 3.2 km from The Drum Tower. The Youth Hostel has free Wi-Fi available for its guests.The Youth Hostel is 4 km from Beijing Zoo and Beijing Exhibition Center. It is about 4.8 km from Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City and the Olympics Sports Center. Participants are provided accommodation on same gender sharing dorm style rooms with attached toilets and showers.
Orientation
All volunteers are provided with an orientation by the local coordinator before starting their project work. The Orientation session covers areas like local transportation , volunteer safety , project introduction and local markets.
Meals
Meals are not included as part of the program fee and participants need to purchase their own meals. While at the project you can have meals with the local staff and children. When outside you will have the opportunity to savour the delectable Chinese cuisine and explore the different restaurants and food joints in the city.
During your Free Time
Volunteers are free on weekends and have time to explore the city and its tourist areas. Beijing has an efficient public transportation system which includes the subway , buses and taxis. The most popular tourist spots areTianamen Square, Great Wall of China (1.5 hour bus ride from the city) , Forbidden City , Temple of Heaven , National Museum, Summer Palace and Silk Market.
