In major towns across Cambodia, proficiency in English language and basic computer skills are crucial for securing employment. However, in Cambodia, access to education and training is not evenly distributed, leaving many individuals, particularly those from impoverished and underprivileged backgrounds at a disadvantage. This disparity results in a significant portion of the population remaining unemployed or relegated to low skilled labour positions that offer minimal financial stability and growth opportunities.
Despite good progress in education, a significant gap remains in addressing poverty which prevents many children and young adults from attending even public schools, much less private institutions. Due to this challenge, our local team in Cambodia seeks placements that value the contribution of volunteers willing to teach English and organise activities for the vulnerable youth.
If you are passionate and enthusiastic about shaping the future of the younger generation, consider volunteering in the Teaching Program in Cambodia with Volunteering Solutions. By volunteering in the teaching program you can provide children with essential language skills that will empower them to pursue better career opportunities in the future.
Volunteering in the Teaching English Program in Cambodia is an important initiative, as it not only enhances language skills but also opens doors to better opportunities. Volunteers play a key role in this endeavor, helping to shape the future of these children and empower them to break the cycle of poverty.
You don’t need to have a professional degree to be a teacher here, all you need is an open mindset and the zeal to make a difference. You can teach the young ones how to communicate well and help them learn the basics of English grammar. A decent command on the language can improve the chances of getting a better-paid job for young workers, as well as expand the scope of job profiles they can venture into. And who knows, probably they’ll also help you to learn a little bit of Khmer!
Sample Placement Profile – HCC
History – House Of Christ Church is a Church in the Steung Mean Chay area, started in 2005. We are serving the middle and lower class in our neighbourhood. The project offers a Non-formal education school with youth volunteers. The project started in the area of the former Old Trash Mountain which was also a risk area for young children. In that area, most of the people are migrants and work as scavengers or garbage collectors, and most of the children there do not go to school, busy helping their parents pick up scrap metal at night.
The project is using 3 rooms of Living Stone Church for classrooms. They are bright, spacious, and clean. Also, there is a big play area during recess. There are 50 students ranging from 4 to 13 years old. The classes start from kindergarten to 6th grade.
As volunteers in the Teaching English program, you are expected to teach students from kindergarten to sixth grade. Volunteers mostly teach conversational English, play games with students and help them in improving their vocabulary and conversational skills.
Note : This is a sample placement and participants are allotted placement depending on different factors such as availability, suitability and requirements of the projects.
It is important to note that participants in the English Teaching Volunteer Project in Cambodia are expected to commit to a minimum of 2 weeks in the program, ensuring that you have enough time to make a meaningful contribution and also immersing yourself in the local community and culture.
