Volunteering Solutions runs welfare-first elephant volunteer programs in Thailand and India — the two most established homes of Asian elephant care. You’ll spend your days preparing food, feeding, walking beside the herd and helping maintain their home, always working around the elephants rather than on them: no riding, no shows, no forced bathing for photos. Fees start from $840 including accommodation, meals, airport pickup and in-country support, and both projects welcome first-time volunteers aged 18+ with full training on arrival. What will you do as an elephant volunteer?
- Prepare food and help with feeding — elephants eat up to 10% of their body weight a day, so there is always work to do.
- Walk with the elephants to grazing and bathing spots, observing natural herd behaviour up close.
- Help maintain enclosures, plant elephant grass and keep the sanctuary running.
- Learn about elephant welfare, the problems with riding camps, and how ethical tourism supports change.
- In India, combine elephant care with a childcare placement on the Golden Triangle for a fuller volunteering experience.
Where can you volunteer with elephants?
Thailand — Chiang Mai. Work at a small welfare-focused elephant home in the hills outside Chiang Mai, caring for rescued elephants alongside their mahouts. From $840 for one week, with weekend time to explore northern Thailand’s temples and night markets.
India — the Golden Triangle. A two-week special combining childcare volunteering with elephant care near Jaipur, plus guided time in Delhi, Agra and the Taj Mahal. From $1,165 including all accommodation and meals.

Is it ethical to volunteer with elephants?
It depends entirely on the project. Elephant riding, performances and pay-to-bathe photo encounters harm the animals — welfare-first sanctuaries let elephants be elephants, and volunteers support the people who care for them. Our programs follow the same green flags we apply to every wildlife placement: no riding, no shows, rehabilitation and lifelong care over entertainment, and transparency about where your fee goes. Volunteering with elephants: frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to volunteer with elephants?
Our Thailand elephant program starts from $840 for one week and the India childcare-and-elephant special from $1,165 for two weeks. Fees include accommodation, meals, airport pickup and in-country support.
Do I need experience to volunteer with elephants?
No. Both programs welcome first-time volunteers and provide full training on arrival. You need to be 18 or older, reasonably fit for outdoor work, and comfortable around large animals.
Will I ride or bathe the elephants?
No. Riding and forced bathing are exactly what ethical projects exist to end. You’ll work around the elephants — feeding, walking alongside them and maintaining their home — with contact led by the animals and their keepers.
Where can I volunteer with elephants?
With Volunteering Solutions, in Chiang Mai, Thailand and on India’s Golden Triangle near Jaipur. Both are long-running projects with local teams who have worked with the elephants for years.
How long can I stay?
Thailand runs from one week and India as a two-week special; longer stays can be arranged. Most volunteers combine the placement with onward travel in Southeast Asia or India.
