How we keep teen placements responsible
Placements for teens are structured so volunteers support local staff rather than take charge of a classroom, childcare group or clinic on their own. A teacher, caregiver or project coordinator is always present, and tasks are matched to what a volunteer without professional training can safely do. Any conservation or animal-care placement follows a welfare-first approach: no riding, bathing or performing with animals, and no direct handling beyond what local keepers permit.

How do you keep teen volunteers safe?
Every placement includes 24/7 in-country support, an arrival orientation and ongoing on-site supervision from our local team. Housing is chosen with supervision and shared-living safety in mind. Staff and project partners working with teens complete background checks, and safeguarding is built into how projects are run — see our safeguarding policy for details.
Will a teen volunteer be left in charge of children or a classroom?
No. Volunteers work alongside a teacher, caregiver or coordinator at all times and are not left to run a class or care for children unsupervised. This boundary exists because teen volunteers are not trained teachers or childcare professionals — their role is to support, not replace, local staff. The same applies to any conservation or animal-care placement, which is guided by local keepers or rangers rather than by volunteers.
Do parents need to be involved in booking?
Parents are usually involved in booking for volunteers under 18, including signing consent forms alongside the background check. What if a teen wants to travel with their school or a group?
For a class or club traveling together rather than joining as an individual volunteer, our school group trips page covers group-specific logistics and pricing. The programs on this page are built for one volunteer joining a project alongside other volunteers and local staff, not for a whole school group at once.
Do I need experience or a language qualification to join?
No. Programs are designed for volunteers with no prior experience, and English is normally enough to get by, since in-country staff and coordinators support communication. A positive, adaptable attitude matters more than qualifications. Some placements, such as the program in Peru, note that basic Spanish helps, but it is not a requirement to join.
Can plans change after booking?
Yes. Dates and program choices can be changed free of charge up to 45 days before departure under our flexible booking policy. This is useful for teens booking around exam schedules or school calendars that can shift. Contact the team as soon as a change is needed so the local project can update its planning.
