When is the best time to volunteer in Portugal?
May-October brings reliable sunshine; July-August is warmest and busiest. Winters are mild, wet and quiet — projects run happily year-round and the city is at its most local.
Visas and getting there
EU citizens need no visa; UK and US nationals get 90 days visa-free in Schengen. We confirm your specifics after you apply. Airport pickup is included in every program, and your in-country coordinator confirms arrival details before you fly.
Weekends and travel
The Douro Valley’s terraced vineyards, Braga and Guimarães (Portugal’s birthplace), Atlantic beaches at Matosinhos, and Lisbon under three hours by train. Surf lessons are a volunteer-house tradition.
Is it safe, and who can join?
Volunteers live in vetted accommodation with a coordinator on call around the clock, and every placement operates under our safeguarding policy.
