Why Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has become one of our fastest-growing destinations for UK volunteers. Three reasons:

Ethical elephant sanctuary (Kegalle)

Our most-booked Sri Lanka programme. Work at a genuine sanctuary in Kegalle (halfway between Colombo and Kandy) that rehabilitates elephants from former captivity. Volunteers assist with feeding, bathing, enclosure cleaning and daily care. No riding, no chained elephants, no cub interactions. From £630 for 2 weeks.

Sea turtle conservation (south coast)

Beach hatchery work at Kosgoda or Rekawa (south coast), Nov-April nesting season. Protect nests from predators, monitor hatching, assist with hatchling releases at dawn. From £680 for 2 weeks.

Teaching in Buddhist monasteries

Teach English to young monks aged 8-18 at monasteries near Kandy or in the cultural triangle (Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa). Structured curriculum, quiet accommodation, vegetarian meals. From £560 for 2 weeks.

Teaching in Colombo community schools

Support English-language lessons at NGO schools serving low-income Colombo communities. Mon-Fri, weekends free. No teaching qualification needed. From £495 for 2 weeks.

Medical placements

UK-specific practicalities

Visa

UK passport holders need Sri Lanka eTA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) — apply online at eta.gov.lk. Tourist eTA covers 30 days, extendable to 90 days once in Sri Lanka. Cost approx US$60. Apply 3-5 days before travel; approval usually within 24 hours.

Insurance

Standard cover with volunteering explicitly included:

Vaccinations

Recommended: Typhoid, Hepatitis A, Tetanus booster. Consider: Hepatitis B (medical volunteers), Rabies (animal programmes or rural areas 4+ weeks), Japanese Encephalitis (rural stays 4+ weeks). Malaria prophylaxis not required for most tourist and volunteer areas.

Trip extension: seeing the island

Sri Lanka is small enough to see a lot in 5-10 days after your programme. Popular routes:

• Cultural Triangle (3-4 days) — Sigiriya rock fortress, Dambulla caves, Polonnaruwa ruins. £150-300.
• Kandy → Ella train (day trip) — one of the world’s most scenic rail journeys (7 hrs through tea country). £10-25 in first class.
• Yala National Park safari (2-3 days) — leopards, elephants, sloth bears. £150-300.
• South coast beaches (3-5 days) — Mirissa, Weligama, Tangalle. £100-300.
• Adam’s Peak pilgrimage climb (overnight, Dec-May) — 4am start for sunrise summit. £50-100.

Is Sri Lanka safe for UK volunteers?

Yes — Sri Lanka has been peaceful since the civil war ended in 2009 and is one of the safer South Asian destinations for foreign visitors. Our programmes have run since 2015 without a serious safety incident. Standard FCDO advice applies. During the 2022 economic crisis there were fuel shortages; the situation has since stabilised. The ethics

• Elephant sanctuaries — anywhere in Asia that lets you ride is NOT a sanctuary. Our Kegalle programme walks with, feeds and bathes. Ask directly before booking anywhere.
• Sea turtle hatcheries — some in Sri Lanka keep hatchlings in tanks for months (which harms them). Ethical programmes release within 48 hours of hatching. Ours does.
• Orphanage placements — never offered. Modern child-safeguarding standards apply.
• “Buddhist monastery tourism” as volunteering — a genuine monastery English programme has a structured teaching role. Anywhere that positions attending puja as “volunteering” is not one.
