The Teaching Volunteer Program in Costa Rica offers a meaningful opportunity for volunteers to support education while immersing themselves in the country’s rich culture and community life. The programs are based in San Ramón de Alajuela and surrounding towns, where volunteers work in local schools and after-school education projects that play a vital role in the development of children and teenagers. Participants support classroom learning by assisting local teachers or, depending on their confidence and subject expertise, leading lessons independently in subjects such as English, math, science, music, or art.
Placements are carefully matched to each volunteer’s skills and interests, ensuring a rewarding and impactful experience. Volunteers work closely with students in two age groups—children aged 6 to 12 and teenagers aged 13 to 17—helping to create engaging, supportive, and inclusive learning environments. This program is ideal for individuals who are energetic, patient, and passionate about working with young people, and no prior teaching experience is required.
The volunteer schedule generally consists of approximately six hours per day, Monday through Friday, and follows the Costa Rican academic calendar from mid-February to mid-December, with a two-week break in July. While the program maintains a structured routine, volunteers also have free time to explore Costa Rica’s stunning landscapes and vibrant culture. By joining this program, participants make a lasting contribution to local education while gaining valuable cross-cultural experience and a deeper connection to life in Costa Rica.
