Community Development Project
This program is for participants who are flexible and want to experience more than one type of volunteer project. We work with different community projects and you will be matched taking into account your profile and the needs of the community.
In Cork, and sometimes further out in Clonmel, you support locally run community projects rather than one fixed role: most placements combine a charity shop with one or two other activities, such as a tourist information office, a day care center for elderly people, community clean-ups, local events, a heritage attraction, or a secondary school as a language assistant. You are matched to a placement based on your profile and what the community needs at the time. This program suits participants who are flexible, at least 18, and comfortable working in English at an intermediate level (B1/B2).
Placements run 3–12 weeks, with new starts monthly (mondays); the next intake begins 5 Oct 2026. You spend your first night in a Cork city center hostel, then move to a host family homestay for the rest of your stay, with all meals covered except lunch on arrival day. Prices start at $1,994, deposit included. The program suits volunteers who want variety across two or three community settings rather than a single fixed project, with a project mentor and local coordinators managing your placement throughout.

Your role on this program
- Assist customers in a charity shop, sort donations and help keep goods well displayed.
- Support staff at a tourist information office by assisting visitors and helping with administrative tasks.
- Take part in community clean-up activities with local groups to improve shared spaces.
- Help at local events such as sports days or festivals with crowd or ticket support and visitor information.
- Assist staff at a local tourist or heritage attraction with visitor services such as a play area, café, or crowd management.
- Help run activities at a day care center for elderly people, organize games, serve food, and spend time talking with residents.
- Assist at a local secondary school as a language-class helper, supporting staff with pupil activities.
Exact duties vary with the placement's needs, the season and your experience.
Role boundaries
You support activities that local staff and community groups already run, working under the day-to-day direction of your project mentor and the local coordinators; you do not lead classes, run programs independently, or take decisions for the host organization. Where a placement involves children, a background check is required and you work alongside, not in place of, qualified local staff. Duties may vary with the placement's needs.
A typical day and week
Volunteers work approximately 25 – 30h per week with two days off.
Timings are the placement's usual pattern; the local team confirms your hours at orientation, and they can change with school terms, clinic rotas, weather and the project's needs.

The placement, its limits and your part in it
Placements sit within a network of local community projects — charity shops, a tourist office, a day care center for elderly people, local schools, and event or heritage sites — organized and coordinated by the local team in Ireland, which also manages the host family network. On site, a project mentor oversees your day-to-day tasks, and local coordinators handle the wider placement and host arrangements.
Because you rotate through locally run activities rather than take charge of them, your work stays within clear limits: you assist existing staff and volunteers, and a background check is required for any placement where children may be present. Your contribution is an extra pair of hands for a few weeks in an ongoing local activity, not a project you run or a guaranteed outcome for the community.

Program fees by duration
Prices include your $249 booking deposit — which is deducted from your total program fee. Your deposit stays valid for one year, during which you may enroll in multiple programs. A 5% international banking fee applies to credit-card payments in USD or AUD.

Accommodation & meals
Airport Transfer
Participants are picked up by a driver who will be waiting with a sign displaying the participants’ name. Participants are transferred to a hostel accommodation located in Cork city center.
Volunteers who arrive at a different airport (Dublin or Shannon) need to make their own way to Cork. It is very easy to arrive at Cork city from Dublin airport as there are buses from just outside the arrival terminal in Dublin that go directly to Cork city center (aircoach.ie). Participants are picked up from their point of entry in Cork (bus station or train station).
It is preferable to book a flight that arrives before 2pm in Dublin airport not to miss the welcome dinner!
If a participant arrives earlier than the arrival date, they should arrange their accommodation and transfer themselves.
Orientation
On the morning of the second day, participants are met by the coordinating staff at the hostel reception and will walk to the Cork Volunteer Centre where the orientation workshop takes place.

After the orientation workshop and their lunch, participants take part in a 2 hour walking tour of Cork City. During the tour, they are provided with practical advice, cultural and historical information.
At the end of the tour, participants are brought to the bus or train station and go to their project location. In some cases, depending on the location and availability of project mentor, the transfer could be done the following morning.
Accommodation & Meals
On arrival in Cork, volunteers are provided accommodation at a hostel in the city.The hostel is located in the city center, a very short walk from all the shops and attractions of the city.

While on the project, volunteers will live in local host family accommodation allowing you to get a real sense of life in an Irish family and community.Staying with a host family allows participants to be fully immersed within the Irish culture. Our local team in Ireland has developed a network of host communities in different part of the country. Host communities are managed by the local coordinators who deal with local families. Every host family goes through a thorough selection process, we make sure our participants are placed with welcoming and supportive hosts. Host families come in different shapes and sizes: e.g. parents and children with a spare room, a single host mother, or a retired couple. Families give participants an instant support system and help them learn the local language and culture. Most host families offer participants generally their own single room. On occasion participants might have to share a bedroom with another participant from the same gender. Many families are living at a walking distance from the projects while others can be based a bit further out of town. In this case volunteers are either given lifts, use bicycles or local transportation (cost not included in program fees).
Meals will be provided along with a packed lunch as needed.
The host family provides breakfast (cereals or toasts, hot drink etc.), packed lunch (sandwiches, fruit etc.) and hot dinner in the evening (e.g. pasta, sausages, potatoes, pizza etc.). It is possible to cater for vegetarians (this information is subject to change, please check with us).
During your Free Time
Ireland is a wonderful place to visit. From vibrant, exciting cities like Dublin, Cork or Galway or Belfast to breath-taking landscapes along the Wild Atlantic Way. Attractions include the world-famous sceneries of Connemara and West Cork, the ring of Kerry, the cliffs of Moher, the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin etc. There are also a multitude of less touristy but equally interesting places to visit and activities to do such as whale watching in county Cork! Local staff will give participants further information on visits and excursions during their orientation and in the welcome pack.
Volunteers will have the weekends to explore. During your free time, volunteers can discover the countryside around Clonmel, Tipperary region. They can visit famous attractions such as the Rock of Cashel Castle and Cahir Castle.

Airport or station pickup
A driver meets you at Cork Airport with a sign showing your name. If you fly into Dublin or Shannon instead, you take the direct coach to Cork and are picked up at the bus or train station; aim to arrive before the welcome dinner.
First night in Cork
You stay in a hostel in Cork city center, in a shared dormitory of 4 to 8 beds, and join the welcome dinner that evening (your own lunch that day).
Orientation and city tour
On the morning of day two, local staff meet you at the hostel and walk you to the Cork Volunteer Centre for a 3.5-hour orientation workshop, followed by a 2-hour walking tour of the city with practical and cultural information.
Transfer to your placement
After the tour you travel to your project location and host family; depending on the location and your project mentor's availability, this transfer sometimes happens the following morning instead.
Ongoing support
Once at your placement, a project mentor supports your day-to-day work and local coordinators manage the host family arrangements, with a 24-hour emergency contact throughout your stay.
