The Sports Coaching Volunteer Program in Sri Lanka offers volunteers the opportunity to inspire children through the power of sport. Based in the coastal city of Galle, the program aims to improve the physical, social, and emotional wellbeing of children from rural communities who have limited access to organized sports facilities and structured recreational activities.
Volunteers work closely with local coaches to deliver engaging football coaching sessions, guided swimming lessons, fitness activities, and interactive games that encourage teamwork, confidence, discipline, and leadership. Beyond developing sporting skills, volunteers serve as positive role models, creating a supportive environment where children can learn, grow, and enjoy being active.
The program also includes community outreach activities in local schools and villages, helping extend the benefits of sport to even more children. Throughout the experience, volunteers receive guidance from experienced coordinators and enjoy meaningful cultural exchange while contributing to an important community initiative.
Roles and Responsibilities
As a Sports Coaching Volunteer, you will assist local coaches in delivering enjoyable and inclusive sports sessions for children between the ages of 9 and 14. Your role involves coaching football, supporting swimming lessons, organizing warm-up exercises, leading fitness and team-building activities, and encouraging children to participate confidently regardless of their skill level.
Volunteers also help plan games and recreational activities, provide individual guidance to smaller groups, and motivate children through positive reinforcement. During community outreach sessions, volunteers participate in sports activities at local schools and villages or assist with educational sports workshops at the local community center. Throughout the program, volunteers work alongside experienced local instructors, ensuring activities are safe, engaging, and suitable for all participants.
Requirements & eligibility
Volunteers joining the Sports Coaching Program should be between 16 and 45 years of age and have a genuine interest in working with children through sport. While previous coaching or teaching experience is an advantage, it is not a requirement. The most important qualities are enthusiasm, patience, adaptability, and a willingness to encourage children of all abilities in a fun, safe, and supportive environment. The minimum participation period is one week, with placements available for up to 12 weeks, and volunteers should plan to arrive on a Saturday before beginning their placement. During the program, volunteers are expected to wear appropriate sports clothing, including suitable footwear for football sessions and modest swimwear with a rash vest or full-length T-shirt for swimming activities.
Your role on this program
- Assist local coaches with football coaching drills, skill development, and friendly matches
- Support guided swimming lessons under the supervision of qualified instructors, helping with water confidence and basic technique
- Lead fitness sessions, warm-up exercises, and team-building games for children
- Provide individual guidance and encouragement to smaller groups within the session
- Participate in community outreach sessions at local schools or villages, organizing football activities
- Assist with sports education sessions at the community center through games, demonstrations, and educational videos
- Help plan upcoming sessions, prepare equipment, and discuss activities with the local team
- Encourage children of all skill levels to participate confidently in a supportive environment
Exact duties vary with the placement's needs, the season and your experience.
Role boundaries
Volunteers assist local coaches and qualified swim instructors rather than run sessions independently, and swimming activities are always supervised by qualified instructors. A background check is required because the placement involves working with children, and duties may vary with the placement's needs.
A typical day and week
A typical week begins with volunteers traveling to the project site each weekday afternoon alongside the local coordinator. Two afternoons are dedicated to football coaching, where volunteers assist local coaches with drills, skill development, friendly matches, and team-building exercises. On another two afternoons, volunteers support guided swimming lessons, helping children improve water confidence, basic swimming techniques, and overall fitness under the supervision of qualified instructors.
One day each week focuses on community outreach, which may involve organizing football activities at local schools or rural villages or assisting with sports education sessions at the community center through games, sports demonstrations, and educational videos. Volunteers also spend time planning activities, preparing equipment, and discussing upcoming sessions with the local team. Evenings and weekends are generally free, allowing volunteers to relax, explore Galle and Sri Lanka’s southern coastline, or spend time with fellow participants.
Timings are the placement's usual pattern; the local team confirms your hours at orientation, and they can change with school terms, clinic rotas, weather and the project's needs.

- No prior coaching or teaching experience required; enthusiasm, patience, and adaptability matter most
- Background check required, issued within 12 months of the start date, since the placement works with children

The placement, its limits and your part in it
Sessions are organized and led by local coaches and project coordinators based in Galle, with volunteers assisting rather than replacing them. Swimming lessons take place under the supervision of qualified instructors, and a background check is required for this placement because it involves ongoing work with children.
Your contribution is to add extra hands during coaching sessions, help children who need more individual attention, and support the community outreach visits that extend sessions to local schools and villages. The structure and continuity of the coaching program is maintained by the local team, not by any single volunteer's stay.

Volunteers stay in the private guesthouses and walk over to the volunteer house and have meals with the other volunteers.
All participants aged 40 years and older will be provided with a private room only and will not be provided accommodation in shared dorm rooms . Additional charges for private room upgrade shall be applicable.
Meals
We provide 3 freshly cooked meals per day all week long (Monday to Sunday): Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. Fresh ingredients are purchased from local markets to prepare these meals. The volunteer homes have cooks from the local community who come daily to cook fresh, homely and tasty local meals for the volunteers. We can cater to a range of special diets including vegan, gluten free, nut free and lactose-intolerant diets.
