Use code SRILANKA15Volunteer in Sri Lanka with Volunteering Solutions from Galle on the island’s south coast — sea turtle and marine conservation at hatcheries and reefs, teaching English and kindergarten support in rural schools, a women’s empowerment program, sports coaching, a dog-care project, a 2-week special with a culture-and-adventure tour, and a one-week Family Volunteer Adventure for families with children from six. All of it runs from two volunteer houses in the beach neighborhood of Unawatuna, one of them with a 40-foot pool and ocean-view rooms.
Programs start every Saturday all year, run from one week to 20 weeks, and are open from 16 on several projects and 18 on others, which makes Sri Lanka a strong choice for school leavers, families and first-time volunteers as well as career breakers. Three meals a day, transport to your project and a bilingual team based in the house are all included; weekends bring Galle Fort, whale watching, Ella’s tea country and Yala’s leopards within reach. Prices start at $874 for one week, deposit included.

Where you stay and what you eat in Sri Lanka
Volunteers live in the Unawatuna neighborhood of Galle, overlooking Unawatuna Beach and the Indian Ocean, in two volunteer houses about 100 meters apart. The Beachside house sits directly across the road from the beach and has 12 air-conditioned bedrooms of various sizes with en-suite bathrooms (most with balconies), a dining area, garden, lounge, terrace and a large office with permanent staff on site; it is covered by CCTV and an overnight security team. The larger house has 13 en-suite bedrooms, most with ocean views, a private 40-foot outdoor pool surrounded by tropical greenery, three kitchens and three living rooms — one per floor — and a big dining area. Rooms are shared with other volunteers; a private-room upgrade can be booked for a fee. Wi-Fi is included; bring your own towel.
Breakfast (6:30–8:30am), lunch (12:30–1:30pm) and dinner (6:30–7:45pm) are served every day, including weekends — Sri Lankan rice and curry, dhal, hoppers, string hoppers, fresh tropical fruit and some Western options, with vegetarian dishes always available. Projects are a short drive away and you travel in the team's air-conditioned van or by tuk-tuk, both included.
Families on the Family Volunteer Adventure stay in a boutique guesthouse-villa next to the volunteer house with air-conditioned twin or triple rooms, and participants on the 2-week special mix the volunteer house with hotel stays during the tour.

Arriving in Sri Lanka and who looks after you
Arrive on Saturday at Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB)
A representative of the local team meets you in the arrivals hall during the scheduled pickup windows and you join a shared transfer down the expressway to Galle (two transfers run every Saturday, morning and afternoon/evening). Arriving outside those windows or on another day? A private transfer is available for USD 100. Families get private transfers both ways.
Saturday–Sunday: settle in
A house tour and your initial training session on safety, security and Sri Lankan culture (Saturday afternoon or Sunday, depending on your arrival time), then a neighborhood familiarization tour on Sunday.
Monday: first day at the project
The team takes you to your school, hatchery, women's group, sports project or dog shelter for an introduction and your tasks for the week; teaching volunteers plan lessons after lunch and can run afternoon classes at the teaching center.
Ongoing support
The bilingual operations team works from the office inside the house, and a 24/7 local emergency line covers you throughout — plus a weekly rooftop yoga class and movie night for the house.
Staying safe in Sri Lanka and who can join
Sri Lanka's south coast is friendly, low-crime and well used to visitors, and our Galle houses are staffed around the clock with CCTV and night security. Everyday precautions: swim only in the calm bays (Unawatuna is sheltered but nearby beaches have strong currents), wear a helmet if you ever ride a scooter, agree tuk-tuk fares before setting off, keep valuables locked in your room, and dress modestly away from the beach — knees and shoulders covered at schools and temples. Solo women volunteer here in large numbers; the training session on arrival covers local norms in detail.
Health: keep routine vaccinations current; hepatitis A and typhoid are commonly recommended and dengue is present, so use repellent. Drink bottled or filtered water. Check NHS Fit for Travel or the CDC and see a travel clinic six to eight weeks before departure. Visa: most nationalities apply online for the Sri Lanka e-Visa (ETA) before travel; your passport needs six months' validity and two blank pages. Confirm current rules on the official Sri Lankan immigration portal.
Who can join: minimum age 16 on the kindergarten, turtle, dog-care and 2-week special programs (with parental consent for under-18s), 18 on the teaching and women's empowerment programs; some projects also set upper age limits (kindergarten 45, teaching 50, women's empowerment 60), and the women's program accepts female volunteers only. The Family Volunteer Adventure needs a minimum of three family members with children aged six or over. A clean criminal background check is required for placements with children, and basic conversational English for all.
Requirements checklist
- Minimum age: 16+ — younger children can join the family-friendly programs with a parent; minimum ages vary by project. Family volunteering
- Background check: required for placements with children or vulnerable adults — issued within 12 months of your start date, in English or with a translation. How to get one
- Travel insurance: comprehensive cover for your whole stay is compulsory; you can bring your own or take the policy we arrange. Insurance details
- Safeguarding: every volunteer follows our code of conduct for children and vulnerable adults, explained again at orientation. Read the policy

How we volunteer responsibly in Sri Lanka
Our Sri Lanka placements are run with local partners along the Galle coast — rural schools and kindergartens, a women's community program, sea turtle hatcheries and marine projects, a dog shelter and community sports sessions — and coordinated by a permanent bilingual team. Volunteers support Sri Lankan teachers, carers, keepers and coaches; you do not replace staff, teach unsupervised or take children away from their placements.
Turtle work follows our animal welfare policy and the hatcheries' own protocols: handling is limited to feeding, cleaning and the monitored care of rescued and hatchling turtles, and releases happen when the biologists judge the hatchlings ready, not on demand for visitors. Reef work is seasonal and led by the project. Dog-care volunteers work under the shelter's vets and staff. Placements with children follow our child protection policy, with background checks before arrival and no photographs without permission.
Come ready to be consistent and hands-on — the same volunteer at the kindergarten every morning, the same pair of hands cleaning turtle tanks — and to learn from the local team as much as you contribute.

Life outside the project in Sri Lanka
Best time: the south and west coast, including Galle, is driest from December to March; the south-west monsoon brings rain from roughly May to September, though projects run year-round and mornings are often clear. The hill country is coolest and driest from December to March, and the east coast is at its best from April to September.
Getting around: tuk-tuks and the scenic coastal train from Galle to Colombo are cheap; buses reach everywhere; the team helps book weekend trips. Weekends: Galle Fort's Dutch ramparts and cafes, whale watching from Mirissa (November–April), surfing at Weligama, the beaches of Hikkaduwa and Tangalle, stilt fishermen at Koggala, and — with a long weekend — the tea plantations and Nine Arch Bridge at Ella, leopards at Yala National Park or the rock fortress of Sigiriya.
Etiquette: remove shoes and cover shoulders and knees at temples, never pose with your back to a Buddha statue, use your right hand, and expect a warm "ayubowan" wherever you go. Our Things to Do in Sri Lanka guide has more.

Your questions, answered
How much does it cost to volunteer in Sri Lanka?
Programs start from $874 for one week, deposit included — one price covering your shared air-conditioned room in the Unawatuna volunteer houses, three meals a day, the shared Saturday airport transfer, training, placement, transport to your project and 24/7 support. Longer stays cost less per week (up to 20 weeks) and each program page shows the full week-by-week total. Flights, the e-Visa, insurance, the return airport transfer and personal spending are extra.
Do I need a visa for Sri Lanka?
Yes — most nationalities apply online for the Sri Lanka e-Visa (Electronic Travel Authorisation) before departure. Your passport needs six months' validity beyond your return date and two blank pages. Rules change, so confirm the current requirements on the official Sri Lankan immigration portal; our pre-departure guide walks you through the application.
Is Sri Lanka safe for volunteers?
Yes. The south coast is friendly and low-crime, and our Galle volunteer houses have permanent staff on site, CCTV and overnight security. Take care in the sea — swim in the sheltered bays and heed local advice on currents — agree tuk-tuk fares in advance, and dress modestly away from the beach. Solo women make up a large share of our Sri Lanka volunteers and the arrival training covers local norms.
What is the minimum age to volunteer in Sri Lanka?
16 on the kindergarten, sea turtle, dog-care and 2-week special programs (with parental consent under 18), and 18 on the teaching and women's empowerment programs. Some projects have upper limits (kindergarten 45, teaching 50, women's empowerment 60). Families with children aged six and over can join the one-week Family Volunteer Adventure, which needs at least three family members.
How long can I volunteer in Sri Lanka?
From one week (kindergarten, turtle, dog care, sports) or two weeks (teaching, women's empowerment) up to 20 weeks; the 2-week special and the family adventure are fixed-length packages. All programs start on Saturdays throughout the year and the next available start is 26 Sep 2026.
Where will I stay in Sri Lanka?
In one of two volunteer houses in Unawatuna, Galle: the Beachside house across the road from Unawatuna Beach with 12 air-conditioned en-suite rooms, most with balconies; or the larger house 100 meters away with 13 en-suite rooms, most with ocean views, a 40-foot pool and three kitchens. Rooms are shared, Wi-Fi is included, and a private room can be booked as an upgrade.
Are meals included in Sri Lanka?
Yes — breakfast, lunch and dinner every day of the week at the volunteer house, including weekends. Expect Sri Lankan rice and curry, dhal, hoppers, fresh fruit and some Western dishes, with vegetarian options always available. Tell us about allergies when you book.
Will I be picked up at the airport in Sri Lanka?
Yes. A shared transfer from Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) to Galle is included on your Saturday start date, with morning and afternoon/evening windows. If you land outside those windows or on another day, a private transfer costs USD 100. The return transfer to the airport is arranged locally at extra cost; families on the Family Volunteer Adventure have private transfers both ways included.
Which vaccinations do I need for Sri Lanka?
None are compulsory for entry from most countries, but routine vaccinations should be current and hepatitis A and typhoid are commonly recommended; dengue is present, so bring repellent. Check NHS Fit for Travel or the CDC for current advice and visit a travel clinic six to eight weeks before you leave.
When is the best time to volunteer in Sri Lanka?
December to March is the driest, sunniest period on the south coast around Galle; the south-west monsoon (roughly May to September) brings afternoon rain but projects run as normal. Whale-watching season at Mirissa runs November to April. Programs run all year round.
I'm traveling alone — will I meet people in Sri Lanka?
Easily. The Galle houses host dozens of volunteers at a time, most of whom arrived solo, with shared meals, a weekly yoga class and movie night, and weekend trips to Ella, Mirissa or Yala organized together. The women's empowerment program and the kindergarten are especially popular with solo female travelers.
What should I pack for volunteering in Sri Lanka?
A quick-dry microfiber towel (towels are not provided), light modest clothes for schools and temples plus beachwear, reef-safe sunscreen, mosquito repellent, sandals and closed shoes, a rain jacket for monsoon months, a small zipped bag for valuables, a first-aid kit and any regular medication. Turtle and dog-care volunteers should bring clothes they don't mind getting wet and dirty; teaching volunteers can bring stationery or picture books.
