Itinerary Summary

  • Sat: Arrival in CMB. Private transfer to Galle.
  • Sun: Training and orientation + Area tour
  • Mon: Turtle hatchery (morning) + Buddhist temple visit (afternoon)
  • Tue: River cleaning in kayaks (morning) + Yoga class (afternoon)
  • Wed: Turtle hatchery (morning) + Surfing lesson (afternoon)
  • Thu: Interacting with local children (arts and crafts, games, etc.) in the morning + bike ride across countryside (afternoon)
  • Fri: Beach clean-up (morning)

Requirements & eligibility

A minimum of 3 family members are required to take part in this program.The minimum age requirement for children taking part in the program is 6 years at the time of joining the program. All participants must be fit and healthy at the time of joining the program.

Living

Accommodation & meals

Airport Transfers 
Families will be provided private airport transfers to and from the Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport Airport by a representative of the local coordinating team on the program start and end date respectively.

Accommodation
Families will be provided accommodation in a beautiful, peaceful, boutique-style guesthouse/villa located very near to the volunteer house. The villa combines the convenience of a boutique hotel with the feeling of a private home; a secluded place to relax and unwind in quiet and secure surroundings. The twin/ triple sharing rooms are decorated in modern, contemporary Asian style with en-suite bathrooms and solar-powered hot water and airconditioning. The accommodation is just a two minute walk to Unawatuna beach with its wide range of great value cafes, restaurants and bars. If accommodation is not available at the villa, another suitable accommodation shall be arranged.

Orientation
A detailed program Orientation will be provided to the families before starting the volunteering program.All participants on arrival get a welcome presentation including health and safety training, culture presentation, project specific presentation and area orientation tour.

Meals
Breakfast shall be provided at the guesthouse/villa and lunch and dinner will be served at the main volunteer house along with other volunteers. Fresh ingredients are purchased from local markets to prepare these meals. We have two lady chefs (a head chef and an assistant) from our community who come daily to cook fresh, homely and tasty local meals for the volunteers. We can cater to a range of special diets including vegan, gluten free, nut free and lactose-intolerant diets. If there are any other allergy or food requirements mentioned to us beforehand, we always do our best to accommodate those needs.

During Free Time
Although the one week family volunteer adventure itinerary is pretty comprehensive and includes many activities for families, additional activities can also be arranged by the local team at additional charges. Otherwise, you can always choose to relax and explore Unawatuna or join other volunteers in monthly activities such as movie nights, bbq dinners at the volunteer house.

A one-off application fee ($249 / £179 / €229 / AU$350) is charged in addition to the program fee — valid for one year, during which you may enrol in multiple programs. A 5% international banking fee applies to credit-card payments in USD or AUD.

Application & getting started
When should I apply?

Apply as soon as your dates are decided — spots are limited. The application fee is valid for a full year, so you can apply early to secure your place.

How do I apply and when do I pay?

Fill in the online application form and pay the application fee. The program fee can be paid later, even in instalments, but must be complete 45 days before the program starts.

What are the requirements?

Participants must usually be at least 17 (families welcome with younger children), with an open mind, good health and respect for local customs. A clear criminal background check is required from all adults.

Accommodation, meals & support
Where will I stay and what about food?

You stay in a volunteer house or with a host family, with meals provided. Private-room upgrades are usually available.

Is there support while I'm there?

Yes — a local coordinator gives you an orientation on arrival and is available 24/7 throughout your placement.

Health, safety & visa
Do I need insurance and vaccinations?

Valid travel-medical insurance is mandatory (available from us at a nominal cost). Consult your travel doctor for recommended vaccinations; your pre-departure pack covers the details.

Do you help with the visa?

Yes — all enrolled participants get visa-requirement information in the pre-departure manual, and your point of contact can answer questions.
