What do our past volunteers say?
“My experience in Portugal joining the Marine Conservation program has been incredible. In addition to learning about the importance of marine ecosystems, I have met wonderful people from all over the world. I would like to praise the work of Ana Matos, the program coordinator of Impactrip, and the two diving instructors I had, Nuno Pereira and Sydney. Their enthusiasm and experience helped me to achieve my goals within the volunteering program and fully enjoy my time in Portugal.” – Andrea M, Marine Conservation Program, Portugal
“The experience was all around great!! We chose the two-week special in Thailand. We loved our time at Happy Elephant Home. The people were amazing, the food was amazing, and the views were amazing! Everything ran super smoothly and there was not a time where I didn’t feel safe!” – Morgan H, Elephant Camp Program, Thailand
What is wildlife conservation volunteering?
Wildlife conservation volunteering means giving your time to projects that protect animals and their habitats — from hands-on care at sanctuaries and rehabilitation centres to field research, habitat restoration and community education. Ethical programmes focus on the animals’ welfare and real conservation outcomes, not tourist entertainment, and most run from one week upward with training provided on arrival.
How to spot an ethical wildlife volunteering project
“Sanctuary” is an unregulated word, so judge any project — including ours — against these signs before you book. As a certified B Corporation, Volunteering Solutions structures its wildlife placements around animal welfare and genuine conservation.
Green flags — a responsible project:
- No cub-petting, no walking-with-lions, no elephant riding or forced bathing for photos.
- Animals are rehabilitated for release where possible, or given genuine lifelong care — not bred for tourism.
- Volunteers work around the animals (food preparation, enclosure maintenance, observation, research) rather than performing set-piece encounters.
- Clear conservation goals and transparency about where your fee goes.
- Local staff employed and respected, with sensible limits on human–animal contact.
Red flags — walk away:
- Hands-on contact with big cats or other apex predators, or pay-to-cuddle photo opportunities.
- Captive breeding for tourism, or cubs separated from their mothers for visitor interaction.
- No clear answer on funding, where the animals came from, or what happens to them long-term.
Wildlife volunteering: frequently asked questions
Is wildlife volunteering abroad ethical?
It can be, if the project prioritises animal welfare and conservation over tourist entertainment. Look for no cub-petting or rides, rehabilitation-for-release where possible, and transparency about funding and outcomes. Use the green-flag and red-flag checks above before you book.
Do I need a science degree to volunteer with wildlife?
No. Most placements welcome volunteers with no experience and provide training on arrival. A science or biology background lets you take on more in research-focused roles, but it isn’t required for animal-care and conservation-support work.
What animals can you volunteer with abroad?
Depending on the destination, projects work with elephants, big cats (hands-off), primates, sea turtles and marine life, birds of prey and more. Ethical projects keep human contact limited and focus on the animals’ wellbeing.
How much does wildlife conservation volunteering cost?
Fees vary by destination and length, and typically cover accommodation, meals, in-country support and a contribution to the project. Check individual programme pages for current pricing.
How long do you need to volunteer with wildlife?
Most projects start from one to two weeks, but longer stays let you build skills, understand the animals and contribute more to conservation outcomes.
