As a volunteer in the Animal Care Programme, you will collaborate with local NGOs to manage stray cat populations using the humane Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) method. Your responsibilities will include trapping stray cats, ensuring they are neutered and receive necessary medical care, and then returning them to their colonies. Friendly cats will be placed in foster care for adoption.
You will assist with trapping, feeding, cleaning, post-surgery care, and maintaining the shelter. Additionally, you’ll help with awareness campaigns and events that promote responsible adoption and animal protection.
This hands-on experience offers you the chance to make a meaningful difference in the lives of stray cats while developing practical skills in animal care.
Why Volunteer in an Animal Welfare Project in Portugal ?
-
Neutered stray animals live more peacefully with each other, increasing their safety and life quality
-
TNR prevents the birth of unwanted litters, enabling a better control of stray cats population growth
-
Dissemination of good animal care practices raises awareness and promotes responsible adoptions
-
Neutered animals are checked up for any health problems and get the needed medical care
Why in Portugal ?
-
There are almost a million abandoned animals on the streets of mainland Portugal
-
There are lots of people who abandon their pets because they don’t have the financial resources to keep them. NGOs work is very important in these
situations as they often offer medical care and neuterization at lower prices -
Along with economical reasons, lack of awareness about the duties and responsibilities upon adoption is one of the main reasons for abandon in
Portugal
