Volunteers working in the Women Empowerment program in India, work for the welfare and social development of women from poor areas, within the capital city of Delhi. All these women come from poor family backgrounds and face low or no education level. Volunteers can make a big difference in these women’s lives by sharing love and warmth with these women. These are young women from disadvantaged backgrounds who are in utmost need of support.
Participants who choose to work for this program, need to be highly determined and understanding. They would be required to adjust to the situations and share the knowledge they have with these women. Volunteering for women in India is of great importance as it can bring about a paradigm change in this gender section. Making them aware of global trends, and helping them learn a skill that can help them become an independent individual is the ultimate objective of this volunteer program in India. Volunteers interested in the cause of upliftment of the women and making a difference in their lives would find this project fulfilling and rewarding.
Volunteers work in different centers set up by NGO’s working for women development. These centers provide counselling in some cases and help women by providing informal training in activities such as adult literacy classes, computer training and income generating activities training (usually beauty therapy, sewing, embroidery or knitting).
These centres mainly focus on the development of women and young girls living in the urban poor areas in Delhi and surrounding areas. Volunteers work along with the women and organization staff in these centres and offer their services in whichever activity is most suited to their skills and experience. Volunteers work for around 5 hrs a day for 5 days in a week.
Please note that unless you have practical skills and experience in beauty therapy, computing, sewing, embroidery or knitting, you will be teaching English as a second language. The facilities at the projects are generally very basic, and there may only be a blackboard and chalk available to use. Volunteers are encouraged to prepare for this and you can bring relevant materials for the classes.
