Volunteer in Nepal: The Complete 2026-27 Guide (Programmes, Costs, Ethics & How to Choose)

Nepal is one of the most popular destinations for UK volunteers — short, meaningful teaching and community projects at some of the lowest all-in costs anywhere. Here is the honest guide: what programmes actually exist, real GBP costs, when to go, what insurance to buy, and how to avoid the ethical traps.

Why Nepal

Three things make Nepal exceptional for volunteer travel, and they’ve made it Volunteering Solutions’ longest-running destination since we started placing volunteers there in 2007:

• Cost. Everything in Nepal — food, transport, accommodation — is dramatically cheaper than the rest of Asia. A well-run 2-week programme starts at £295, including accommodation, meals, project support and 24/7 in-country coordinator. Outside the programme, you can eat well for £3-5 per day.
• Genuine need in specific communities. Kathmandu Valley schools, monasteries in the mountains, and rural health outposts all have real, sustained roles for volunteers with basic English or teaching backgrounds. Nepal is one of the few places where 2-4 week teaching placements have measurable, long-term impact — because Nepali children are learning English as a school subject and additional native-English contact time meaningfully improves outcomes.
• The country itself. Kathmandu, Pokhara, Bhaktapur, Chitwan National Park, and the Annapurna and Everest trekking regions are all within reach on a 2-4 week trip. Most volunteers extend their trip with a 5-10 day trek at the end.

Types of programmes that actually exist

Teaching English in Kathmandu Valley schools

The most popular Nepal programme by a large margin. You’ll work in one of ~15 partner schools around Kathmandu, Bhaktapur or Lalitpur, supporting Nepali teachers with English lessons for children aged 6-14. Typical schedule: Monday to Friday, 9am-2pm, weekends free for travel. No teaching qualification needed — orientation and lesson-plan support included. From £295 for 2 weeks, £1,120 for 8 weeks.

Buddhist monastery English programme

Distinctive to Nepal. You’ll stay at a monastery in the Kathmandu Valley (or one of the highland monasteries at longer stays) and teach English to young monks aged 8-18. Structured curriculum, dawn puja optional, vegetarian meals, quiet accommodation. Popular with volunteers seeking a more contemplative experience. From £340 for 2 weeks.

Healthcare shadow & support

For medical, nursing and allied-health students. Shadow doctors and nurses at Kathmandu community hospitals or at a rural health outpost. Scope of work varies by qualification — pre-med shadow only, nursing students can assist with basic care, qualified professionals can take on more responsibility. Requires proof of student/professional status. From £420 for 2 weeks.

Trekking-integrated volunteer programmes

Combine 1-2 weeks of village teaching in a lower-Annapurna community with a guided 5-8 day trek. Best done September-November. From £580 for 2 weeks (teaching + trek included).

Women’s empowerment

Support skills-training centres for women in Kathmandu — sewing cooperatives, English literacy, small-business support. Requires a 4-week minimum for meaningful engagement. From £520 for 4 weeks.

What a typical 2-week Nepal trip actually costs from London, Manchester or Edinburgh, based on what our past UK volunteers have spent.

UK-specific practicalities

Insurance

Standard UK travel insurance usually excludes volunteer work. You need cover that specifically includes “volunteering”, and if you’re doing anything physical (construction, wildlife) also “manual labour”. UK providers that reliably cover Nepal volunteering:

• Endsleigh Gap Year — designed for students and gap-year travellers; typically £45-75 for 2-4 weeks in Nepal.
• World Nomads — flexible, easy to extend mid-trip if you decide to add a trek.
• CoverForYou Backpacker — cheapest for straightforward trips.
• STA Travel Insurance — for younger travellers, often cheapest under 30.

If you plan to trek above 3,000m (Annapurna, Everest base camp), make sure your policy explicitly covers high-altitude trekking — many policies exclude anything above 3,500m without an add-on.

Visa

UK passport holders get Nepal visa on arrival at Kathmandu airport. Bring US dollars in cash for the fee (they don’t accept cards reliably): $30 for 15 days, $50 for 30 days, $125 for 90 days. Two passport photos and one blank passport page required. No advance application needed.

Vaccinations

Book a travel-clinic appointment 6-8 weeks before departure. Recommended for Nepal: Typhoid, Hepatitis A, Tetanus (booster if 10+ years). Consider: Hepatitis B (if healthcare volunteering), Rabies (if animal work or remote areas), Japanese Encephalitis (if 4+ weeks rural). Malaria tablets not needed for Kathmandu Valley; consult GP for lowland areas.

Trip extension: the Annapurna trek

Roughly half our UK Nepal volunteers extend with a trek. Common options:

• Annapurna Base Camp (7-10 days) — 4,130m peak elevation, teahouse-supported, ~£300-500 with a local guide.
• Poon Hill circuit (4-5 days) — 3,210m, easier, sunrise views of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna, ~£180-250.
• Everest Base Camp (12-14 days) — 5,364m, the classic, requires proper acclimatisation, ~£800-1,200.
• Chitwan National Park safari (3-4 days) — non-trekking alternative, jungle safari with rhinos and elephants, ~£150-250.

The ethics — what NOT to book

Nepal has had a well-documented voluntourism problem, particularly with orphanage placements. Two categories to avoid:

• Orphanage placements. Legitimate providers (Volunteering Solutions included) no longer offer them. Modern research and Nepali government policy now recognise that short-term volunteers in residential children’s care cause attachment harm. Look for day-programme alternatives — school teaching, community outreach, family-support work — all of which we still offer.
• Vague “help wherever needed” placements. If a programme can’t tell you specifically what you’ll do each day, walk away. Legitimate programmes have structured schedules and defined roles.

How to book

1. Pick a programme and rough dates. “Teaching in Kathmandu, first three weeks of October” is enough to start.
2. Enquire via our Nepal destination page or WhatsApp. You’ll get availability confirmation within 24 hours.
3. Pay the £179 application fee to lock your dates. Programme fee is due 60 days before departure.
4. Book flights + insurance — we send a UK-specific checklist once your dates are locked.
5. Go. You’ll be met at Kathmandu airport by an in-country coordinator on arrival.
